DS9 - 'Second Season Cliffhanger' by Diane Carey

I wonder if it is a promotional slick wrapped around a previous DS9 novel, like a production sample for display at an international book fair?

Wow, I would've bet money that this was just a mock cover that someone on the internet dummied up. I've seen some posts where people replaced the genuine titles of Trek novels with humorous ones commenting on the cover art. This totally looked like one of those. Weird that it's apparently genuine.

I cropped out the relevant section of the pictures from the listing. I'm guessing we can't post direct Ebay links here, but if you search 'Star Trek Deep Space Nine PPB Novels Saratoga Siege Tempest Emissary Lot of 27' you should see the bundle auction from 'brightlightbookseller', based in the US, which has the original pics of the full set. They're also offering TOS/TNG/VOY bundles too, so it looks to be a real book and the seller isn't aware they've got something rare there.

How about that. I might still have some donation credit at Bright Light from when I lived in Orlando. I don't remember ever seeing a copy of Second Season Cliffhanger, though.

Okay, according to John, who was the junior editor working under Kevin Ryan at the time, the powers-that-be at Simon & Schuster assumed that DS9 season 2 would end with a season-spanning cliffhanger, and the cover was solicited pending revelation of the title. Paramount kept insisting that they weren't doing a cliffhanger, but the cover was made anyhow and given the September slot, eventually replaced with the novelization of "The Search."

John has no idea how that cover got on an actual book, since there were only solicitation cover flats done. It's possible that some copies of The Search had that cover put on it somehow -- or the eBay seller got his hands on a cover flat and wrapped it around another book.....
I remember in the Okudas' 1994 first edition of The Star Trek Encyclopedia (which I think was published prior to the airing of DS9's season-two finale), the working title of the season-ender was revealed at the time to be "Dominion" (in an article referencing the destruction of the U.S.S. Odyssey), which then of course later got changed to "The Jem'Hadar" after the Encyclopedia went to press. Very interesting find.

I have a vague partial memory of the change being due to something in the UK. A company or politics or something. ...unless my memory is completely wrong, which happens a lot. ;)

OK, the lot of books arrived today. As KRAD theorized, between the covers is Diane Carey’s novelization of “The Search.”

It makes an interesting addition to my collection of Star Trek paperbacks. Is there another copy like that anywhere?

Does it have an ISBN?

Thanks for sharing that with us! Nice to have this curiosity satisfied. Let's see some scans, man! Have you read the novelization of The Search prior to getting hold of that copy? Congratulations scoring that book. :)

Interesting little curio there. I take it it was some sort of advance copy?

As Keith said in post 20:

So it's evidently some sort of cover mixup where a leftover placeholder cover somehow ended up getting put on the actual book that superseded it. As I said earlier, an advance reader copy would be clearly identified as such on the cover.
