Jean-Luc Picard died. There was a body and everything.
I'm perfectly willing to accept his synth duplicate as the real deal, but will the wider galaxy accept it as readily? And what would the people who knew him make of it? La Sirena's crew know what's up. Guinan probably wouldn't bat an eye. I wonder if Admiral Clancy would still take his calls. Hell, I could see someone like Worf having a difficult time accepting him as the real Picard.
My hope is that Picard will now have to face the questions that Dahj and Soji grappled with in season one. Is he real? Is he still himself? Does he want to be?
There is also an opportunity to explore themes of legacy from the perspective of a man who could conceivably witness his own funeral and watch the galaxy judge him posthumously.
There is definite story potential. I hope they make use of it.
