That seems like crappy writing to me, or at least him using the format badly. The individual "fragments" of your television story shouldn't confuse your audience before they've seen the entire thing.

He's a novel writer, which I think is a bigger problem than some folks probably anticipated. To HIM it's all clear in his mind, and in a book, this kind of approach works fine because he can mention everything and hint at things and establish as many sub plots as he likes whereas a television series simply doesn't have enough room for all these "behind the actions of the characters" thoughts, especially not if you have a complex plot shoved into just 10 episodes.

As much as I admire him for actually bothering to answer fan questions, I keep thinking that they should have either made Chabon write this series as a new Trek litverse universe (kinda like the Shatnerverse) OR they should have released PIC in its entirety to make at least SOME things clearer (I get it that CBS wants to make money with All Access and throwing out an entire season only makes people subscribe for a very short time, but the "one episode per week" format really is a bit... unfortunate for a show like this where episodes are so heavily intertwined).

How about a pre-episode thread and then the episode thread with voting on the release day? That way the actual episode discussion doesn't begin on page 78.

I like that idea. I mean, it's not a huge hardship, but it is a pain to have to scroll through umpteen pages of speculation and predictions just to find the actual comments on the episode.

(Granted, we only have one more week to deal with this. Maybe something to think about for Season 2.)

I really want robots to invade the galaxy and start destroying planets !! It would be great to see all the great civilizations in the galaxy unite to stop the robots
Wouldn't it be funny if after all this build up, the synths send their SOS to these ancient all-powerful synthetics, and it turns out they no longer exists because even robots aren't immortal after all.

Eh, there are plenty of shows out there that structure themselves as mysteries where none of the plot strands truly make sense until the final episode when all the pieces finally fall into place. It just isn't a storytelling format Star Trek has ever used before.

But I agree that failing to translate enough behind-the-scenes detail onto the screen is a flaw of this show.
On a mobile device, not sure. If on a computer, you can point your cursor over the image and left-click to 'pause' the slide.

You are entitled to that opinion of course. Nothing wrong with it. But some fans want Picard to be more like TNG. Personally, I liked that it felt a lot like a TNG episode. The lone settlement with the strange inhabitants coming out to greet the away team was very TOS and TNG.

I think you just prove my point though that you can't make everybody happy. Make the show too much like TNG and you disappoint fans who want something different. Make the show too different and you disappoint fans who want it to be more like TNG.

As I've said before, striking the balance between "Hey, this isn't like the old stuff!" and "Hey, this is just the same old stuff!" is always going to be a challenge when it comes to any long-running property. And you're never going to satisfy everyone.

Disappointed with this episode. It provides answers but not really satisfying ones. I think the motivations behind a lot of the characters other than Picard are quite weak and quick to develop. Whether they be murderous intentions, romantic feelings, world domination etc. The moments don't feel earned.

Oh and "Poor Hugh" but when the heck did he resort to violence?

what I would like is.. Something like The Day the Earth Stood Still..
Have the "Synth Transgalactic Empire and Spice Emporium" be just like Gort.. Bronze Soji calls them, but they show up and stop ALL Sides, Destroy the Romulan fleet, but also kill bad robots like Bronze Soji.. at the end take the synths that want to go join there Emporium and tell the romulans F' off we can destroy you on a whim, but we won't unless you threaten us or others of our kind.. spread the word..

Can we just call it "A fistful of Datas Part 2"? LOL
I prefer "All my Datas."

Nope. It is impossible to please everyone. That's why I admire Chabon and his writing in this episode. He is telling the story he wants and fan expectations be damned.

I am likely completely off track, but does anyone else think that this isn’t how the original episode was filmed or meant to air?

I only say this cause Chabon mentioned that the final episodes were longer, yet this one wasn’t, and this episode was so disjointed and hard to follow. Even at a base storytelling level it’s all over the place.

Is it possible that CBS edited the episode themselves after reviewing the final two episodes and changed them to make the final longer? Idk whether tv networks actually do this, as its not my forte, but in the music industry, often record labels will change music videos from the version submitted by the directors. Sometimes they take out complete storyline’s. That’s the only reason I can come up with for why this episode is so hard to watched. It feels disjointed.

(Example, if anyone cares, is the music video for Kelly Clarkson “Already Gone”. The original video was that she had died and was haunting her lover who wouldn’t move on. The label wasn’t happy with director Joseph Kahn’s submitted video as it was deemed too “controversial” so they re-edited it. The final version is just her singing in a black dress in front of an invisible orchestra. Whilst those scenes appeared in the original version, 80% of the original storyline was erased. This happens to ALOT pop of artists.)

I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, but how was this episode hard to follow?

As a betting man, I am counting against a Federation fleet appearing in the final episode. This is a Noodle Shop series, not a Pita Shop series.

And Dr. Noonien Soong came close to perfection with Juliana Tainer. She passed herself as a human. Her creator did not fear her, he did not destroy her because she had the potential to live beyond him. Her positronic brain would fail her, giving her a peaceful death, even as she believed herself to be human. So, her example is a positive rebuke to what was said by the Admonition.

As I understand it, Maddox left Coppelia to place Dahj and Soji undercover on Earth and the Artifact respectively in order to find out the truth behind the synth ban.

But what does the artifact have to do with the synth ban? I guess on the borg cube to try to get information from Romulans? It's not really clear and I shouldn't have to make up my own head canon. Why did Maddox care about the truth of the synth ban or how did he come to suspect Romulans and Starfleet were part of the Mars attack (Seems to be just Oh - How did Maddox (and Raffi) come to suspect this?

I'm just not buying that almost 10 years after the mars attack he put an android on a borg cube and on earth to find the truth about the ban because there isn't any setup or explanation for it. What was he going to do if the twins found out Starfleet and Romulans were working together? Report it to the public? There isn't enough explanation here.

You also said in your post that "He didn't return to Coppelia for fear of leading enemies there, perhaps." Your perhaps at the end proves my point. The show didn't explain it and it doesn't make sense.

I was a big defender of the show from the beginning on twitter and other forums, but the more I think about it the more it falls apart unfortunately.
