Game The Most Disliked Time Travel/Anomaly/Loop Story

"Time Squared" gets my next vote. It was a good mystery throughout, and had a very creepy, unsettling vibe. I'm actually glad the vortex was never explained... there should still be some mysteries in the universe for someone later to try and figure out.

Aw, you left "Timeless" up until I had a chance to save it! You're too good to me. :luvlove:

Not only a too-rare Kim story, but one in which Garrett Wang shows some heretofore undiscovered acting chops, playing Harry's bitterness and survivor's guilt grippingly. Beltran has less to do, but acquits himself well enough, showing some real tenderness to his character's girl-of-the-week. And Captain LaForge -- yeah! Add a gripping story and some impressive visuals, and this was a bang-up 100th episode.

I love Cause and Effect so much. Considering that the episode is essentially the same few scenes played out repeatedly, what makes the episode work so well are the different ways that the scenes are shot. I just love seeing the crew getting closer to working the mess out, and then to have the loop start again.

"All hands abandon ship!" and the Enterprise blowing up is a great teaser as well.

“The Naked Time” is barely a time anomaly story, really. Nothing time related happens until the last minute and a half and even then it literally has nothing to do with the rest of the episode. However, it's still one of the absolute greatest, most memorable episodes in the entire franchise. I'll take you home again, Kathleen! Sorry, neither.

And I always did kind of dig the way that discovery of time travel just sort of casually popped up there - it makes the series feel more natural that such wildly different phenomena can be encountered so close together despite clearly not being related at all rather than being artificially walled off into separate episodes.

"YEAR OF HELL" gets taken out. An excellent episode that sets up part 2 well. The concept was one of the best VOYAGER ever did... a ship that uses time itself as a weapon. And seeing the ship battered like that was refreshing. And had some great character moments to boot, Seven and Tuvok being among my favorites.

Brannon Braga gets a lot of flak for some things over the years, but I think he wrote really good, high concept stories. I do think he's better with a writing partner, though. Joe Menosky was a good wingman for his episodes. ("DISTANT ORIGIN", "SCORPION", "YEAR OF HELL", etc.)

So fortuitous that Frakes was drawn as the director for this one -- the episode is amazing, and it's hard for me to think of another TNG script this difficult to execute.

"Captain's Holiday" is such a fun little side adventure. I love the design of the Vorgons. And it's such a great example of what you can achieve with TNG's leisurely pacing. I adore those first 15 minutes (Marina Sirtis particularly hits every line out of the park), and all it is is the crew trying to get Picard to take a vacation.

A couple good entries are present, but for now let's take care of:

TNG, Season 1: “We’ll Always Have Paris”

  • There's a cool temporal anomaly! (But needed to be delved into a little more)
  • There's three times the fun with Data! (A shame this is season 1 and Data is a little off key and a little more uncharacteristically emotive at times.)
  • Guest star Michele Phillips did all except sing California Dreamin' while in France on Monday, Monday! (Yes, I adore The Mamas & The Papas and naturally a review, no matter how small, has to throw in some folksy music references cuz she's good.)
  • The bar in France has the same chrome 80s bookshelf that Kirk had in his domicile
  • Manheim was steamrollered by Dr Crusher's stroking his head!:guffaw:
  • And best of all, Picard enjoys fencing, just like I had at the time. NERD!!!

Season 1 was still finding itself but the tone and feel of this episode is light years superior to any number of episodes preceding it, particularly in the first half of the season. Even if 24th century fashion still revolves around the alluring combination of silver and beige, even if Riker is more of a nit than usual, and even if Picard at this point is catching up to the number of "past relationships" that Kirk had except Kirk's were a tinge more interesting. Having moped on about that, I've always had a fascination with this episode as it's only real problem is not maximizing its potential, of which a lot exists.

So many great episodes, and I'm glad to see most of my favourites have already been saved. So, from those left, I'm going to save "Eye of the Needle" - a fantastic Voyager episode and, in my opinion, one of the best of the entire series (plus, the premise was really only something that Voyager could do). The constant raising and dashing of the crew's hopes was heart breaking, and the performances were excellent (particularly Vaughn Armstrong as Dr Telek R'Mor).

To misquote The Who, but not Doctor Who,

♪ ♫
now we're talking about “Star Trek: Generations” ♩ ♬

Yes, this one too has a soft spot in my heart and holds a lot of promise with some of its plot themes. The rushed nature of the script's development does it a disadvantage nonetheless but there are some good points.

The movie just about fulfills Q's comment to Picard at the end of ATG in exploring what's out there. No other TNG movie does this.

But thank Dr Soran for that. While the intention appeared to be to make him a villain one should have sympathy for, that didn't really come across that way. He doesn't come across very strong with villainy either, meaning the acclaimed but hapless Malcolm McDowell is stuck with a largely generic character as a result. Deleted scenes, however, show a couple of worthwhile villainous scenes (Geordi is tortured worse, Kirk is shot in the back) and would have gotten some in the audience (like me) wishing Picard would win the day back when the flick was in the theater proper. Amazingly, his metaphorical line about time being fire in which we burn was kept in - and told to Picard at just about the worst possible time.

The ship crash sequence looks great, though as much as I liked the mashup of 1701-A and 1701-D to make 1701-E (complete with 1701-A style shuttlebay for no reason at the rear end), the dreadnought refit of 1701-D in "All Good Things" also made for a fantastic design, of which the base 1701-D model proved when thrust on the big screen with all its grace.

So it's saved, despite its imperfections.

What’s Past Is Prologue, it ended the mirrorverse arc that I really liked and saved mirror Georgiou who I think is a great addition to the cast. It was an exiting episode and I loved how the Discovery crew really came together as a crew after Lorca was gone.

"YEAR OF HELL, PART II" gets saved since so one else has and most of the others I would have saved already been. Thanks guys, for letting me take care of the full two-parter. :)

We delve into the mind of Annorax more, and he is far from a simple villain. Great story with a great guest character and actor, this was a highlight of the series and season 4.

I remember reading somewhere that "Shattered" was a unique sort of "clip show" in that it revisited points in Voyager's past, but never used old footage. So, props for a clever conceit. It was good to see Martha Hackett's Seska again, and the glimpse of future-Icheb and future-Naomi showed them to be estimable people.

I've missed a lot of my favourites, so the next one to vote for is Accession. I think this is a very intriguing look at Sisko being happy about being able to release his Emissary title, only to find he has to fight to get it back after Akorem Laan turns out to be a bust.

I also like seeing Kira doing her best following Akorem's old-fashioned philosophies despite them being at such odds from reality.

Two real good ones remain, but do never I things order in linear*:

VOY, Season 7: “Endgame”

One final gambit and hurrah for the Voyager crew. No matter how bad the story gets, it's actually nice to see the Queen return because both actors playing the role elevated it quite a bit.

Janeway fudging her own stance on the temporal prime directive to save her crew is a redo of "Timeless", but carries enough weight that it holds its own and it's not bad when it works out that way and not noticing upfront. Kirk always broke the rules for his crew. Picard pretty much didn't. Sisko did but not in the same way. so Janeway is a return to form after trying out new ideas and done well enough.

Especially for Tuvok, my favorite character, as with Seven, as I can relate to their personalities the most. At least as a perceived allegorical parallel. Would Gene like it that Tuvok had his own form of religion albeit for catharsis? Probably not, but TMP and TVH showed a form of religion with ceremonial robes. Even Spock in TUC seemed to have his moment with candles too. So there is, if nothing else, a blending at work for their lore that meets a logical prerogative if nothing else, which doesn't feel inauthentic but still begs some fun questions nonetheless. Where did my three-sided coin go, I'm still ambivalent...

Any way, would a prologue episode showing them going back to humdrum lives and awards and court martials and such really be entertaining? I'm on the fence, so maybe it's best they didn't. Where would they go, where could they go? And if they did, why not return them during season 6 instead of Unimatrix Zero? Oh well, chances are a lot of people wouldn't have tuned in for that.

And as much as it's cool Neelix get returned to his own kind, why not explore a sole survivor living with an adopted society? VOY did miss a few opportunities but it was a coin toss as each choice was still viable and with optimistic overtones.

* the dorky puzzle's solution is "I never do things in linear order"

You just beat me to it! I would have voted this one too, also because this is a good character study of Sisko, and, moreover, in my book this isn't really a time travel story. The element is there, yes, but it just as easily could have been done with another contemporary being "blessed" by the Prophets- so it's more of a plot device than at the heart of the story.

I'll vote “Wrongs Darker Than Death Or Night” for now- even though I'm not sure this story technically qualifies since it seems uncertain whether Kira actually went to the past, or just had some truth-based hallucination, it is a great story of Kira coming to terms with her mother's history when it turns out to be slightly different from her cherished beliefs.
