The New Mutants -- news, rumors, opix, etc;

We may actually see a complete halt in movie releases in the coming weeks. Here In BC, Canada, any events involving gatherings of more than 250 people are cancelled.
They're completely closing all of the theaters in countries like France and Italy.
This movie just can’t catch a break. Just put it on Disney +
I think this is one that would probably be more appropriate for Hulu, it looks pretty dark for Disney+.

Universal is releasing a bunch of their movies that are in theaters on VOD, and will be releasing the new Trolls movie on VOD the same day it's coming to theaters. They will be charging $19.99 for a rental, instead of the usual $2.99 or $3.99. Maybe Disney will see that and just release this that way too. It's gotta be more or less done, so I don't see why they couldn't just release it on VOD, and if they follow Universal's model and charge around $20 they'd probably still make decent money off of it. I'd definitely rent it if given the opportunity.

I think it's a good idea. Sure, I get the nostalgia for the theater experience, but the modern theater experience isn't really that great anymore, with the noisy recliner-chair motors and the patrons texting during the movie and the endless commercials up front and the expensive food and drink. The reality is less cool than the nostalgic ideal. Ultimately it's the movies themselves that matter more than where you see them.

I think we're lucky (in a relative sense) that if this pandemic had to come along, it came at a time when we already have a viable alternative to gathering in public places for work or shopping or recreation. This whole thing would be much harder to endure without the Internet.

The only thing I have nostalgia for is the cartoon before the movie. The big comfy armchairs, reserved seating, big screens, loud digital sound, I generally like the modern theater experience. The cramped seats where a tall guy sitting in front of you can ruin the whole thing and you had to get there a half-hour early to get good seats can stay in the past.

Would a $20 option be nice to watch a new blockbuster at home, yeah, though it's 3x what I usually pay to see a matinee with my hermit self. I don't have as many great memories of watching something at home with others as I do going to the theater. You think people texting during the movie at the theater is bad...

In a great example of the worst possible timing, we got a letter from our electrical company yesterday telling us that our area is going to have all of it's electricity turned off for four hours tomorrow while they do some work. Luckily it's nice out here, so we're just going to take the dogs out for a hike and eat at the park. The problem is that isn't going to take up the whole time, so we're going to do to fill up the rest of the time.

It's funny, I don't have to deal with any of those problems at the theatre. Well, except for the commercials, but we'd still have to deal with those with a VOD service. Especially if it's anything like the On-Demand programs I get through my cable service which actually have commercials rigged so that you can't skip them.

But yeah, the theatre seats in my area don't have motors in them, and anyone who texts, or even checks their phone during a movie will be removed by staff. And I simply don't buy and food or drinks at the theatre. Though that's mostly out of convenience, since getting drinks at the theatre usually means I need to take a piss about halfway through the movie.

Hell, I think it's been over fifteen years since I even needed to put up with any jackasses in the theatre who felt compelled to provide their own audio commentary during the movie.

That's not the case everywhere. I don't buy food or drink at the theater. I go to the McDonalds across the street and stuff my face before hand. I don't have problems with patrons 99% of the time except on $5 ticket night and I've just quit going to those since I have A-List. And I just always arrive 20 minutes after the scheduled time so I don't have to see stale previews.

I don't mind the commercials since it's better than sitting in silence before the movie starts, and I like the trailers. We have occasionally run into people being annoying, but it's pretty rare, and for food we usually just buy candy or other munchies at the grocery store and sneak them in.

Commercials before a movie annoy me. Generally, paying for something means you get it ad-free, or at least it should. It used to be that getting away from endless commercials was one of the main draws of going to the movies over watching TV.

Is there a word for nostalgia for things before your own time? I want to say I "miss" the days of old when you'd get a cartoon and a newsreel and a serial chapter and a short film before the main attraction, but of course I wasn't alive for those days. Even after that, it used to be that you'd often get a specially composed overture before a film, with Star Trek: The Motion Picture being one of the last films to have one. After that it was just generic Muzak, and now it's commercials.

I'm just talking about the slides and video clips that start about 20 minutes or so before the movie's start time, not the trailers and stuff that goes with the movie.

That's what I mean, the commercials before the trailers proper.

Universal is putting movies currently in the theatre online this week. Not Blockbusters which they are delaying but mid range movies like Invisible Man. Sounding more like this will be the way to go for this movie.
