TOS is NOT Star Trek

Thomas Elliot

I grew up watching a handful of Star Trek episode like "The Trouble with Troubles" and a few others I can barely recall. But I really grew up on TNG and later the TOS films. Star Trek always represented a future to aspire to, where people put aside their differences to benefit the galaxy.

So I started to rewatch TOS and wow, it doesn't at all represent what Star Trek should be.
"Errand of Mercy" for example.
Advanced, enlightened, all-powerful alien race prevents the Klingons and Starfleet from going to war. And a Starfleet Captain, Kirk is upset about that? Is angry they can't fight it out like savages?
He even says, "I'm just a soldier." I thought the mission was to explore and seek out new life and new civilizations, and about fighting Federation enemies in a war.

This is not my Star Trek.

Given that S3 was regarded by a certain segment of the fanbase as "not proper Star Trek" even back in the day, the title of this thread is at least one-third on point!

It may not be “your Star Trek” (which is fair enough, not everything works for everyone), but without it, none of the Trek you do love would exist.

And from the 1960’s POV, Star Trek was a positive vision of the future. Context is everything.
I think it's a joke.

And anyway, the "Trouble with Troubles" was like the most troublesome episode of the 4th season.

I’ve been rewatching the third season lately, while not as sharp as the first two seasons, it is entertaining.
I also rewatched it fairly recently. The season starts off fairly strong, but many of the later episodes seem underdeveloped IMO

Just so to let everyone know, I'm just having some fun. It's interesting that all the new Trek is considered by some in the fan community as "not Star Trek," and they use TNG as the standard. And yet TNG was originally criticized by some as not being Star Trek, so I made a thread about that to see what arguments could be made that TNG was not Star Trek, or didn't have the same spirit as the original.
Someone in another thread said, "I can't wait till someone says TOS is not Star Trek."
Challenge accepted.

I was going to do a parody post about it. I'll type it up when the inspiration strikes and the moment for it is right.

The OP may have been writing in Meta mode, but sadly there really are people who don't like The Original Series. That's just the world we're living in. These people exist. :wtf:
