The Tal Shiar ships at the end of the episode are the same ones seen in the very early trailers approaching Mars. Maybe they were place holder before they made those defense ships? A change in story? Or Mars was a placeholder for Soji’s planet? Or for some reason the Romulans will attack Mars in the last two episodes lmao

Oh yeah, after finally persuading her to give him help, Picard stood Clancy up...she's not gonna fucking like that!
Maybe then she will call Will "active reserve" Riker, because he knew Picard well and maybe has a clue where this obnoxious Picard has buggered off to!

ETA: I have the solution to the ancient civilization! Those flower ships/ thingies are definitely Vorlon.

It would probably be super fanwanky but I am hoping the squadron is composed of a Galaxy class, Sovereign class, and Intrepid class ship and it is led by Riker and shows up in the finale.

This episode gave us a lot of great moments.

- A lot of information but it was good stuff. We learn of an advanced race that can move whole stars. Very high scifi!
- We get a good backstory for Rios. Very touching.
- The scene with all the Rios holograms was funny and well done.
- Seven temporarily becoming a Borg Queen was a genuine WTF?! moment even though the trailer hinted at it. Especially, when her eyes change and we hear the Borg voice say "We are the Borg!" WOW. I am surprised that all the Borg drones got spaced and Seven apparently is back to her normal self. I was kinda hoping we would see Seven as a Borg Queen longer and see the Borg drones in a micro-collective assimilate the Romulans and show us how scary the Borg are. Although I suspect that Seven will help the xBs that survived. Maybe they will still control the Borg cube just not as a Borg collective.
- The scene with Soji and Jurati, "can you eat?" It was wonderful to see Juratti with such child-like wonder in seeing Soji. And the scene with Picard talking about Data was also great.
- Picard's speech about hope and openness was classic Star Trek. I definitely feel like the show is going to redeem Starfleet at the end. It's all about Picard restoring Starfleet to the hopeful ideals of TNG.

Can't wait for the finale!

I thought this episode got drowned in exposition. Too much telling and too little showing. I felt like applauding when Clancy told Picard, finally and at long last, to shut the eff up.

I like some of the little character moments and revelations. Ramdha the ex-Borg, the renowned mythology scholar with the somewhat shaky mental health, is the aunt and guardian of Narissa and Narek. Narissa appears to be fond of her in her own way and has personal reason to hate the Borg. But Narissa must really be a stone cold psychopath to be the only one left standing after all the other initiates went mad during that initiation. I hope she was not killed by the zombie Borgs. I also noticed that the Zhat Vash initiates were all female, which makes me wonder if this is a competing order of Romulan nuns that believes in keeping secrets.

So Oh is half Vulcan, half Romulan. The Romulans must have been planting sleeper agents on Vulcan and raising their own spies with Federation citizenship, a la The Americans. Presumably her Romulan mother was also Zhat Vash.

Where did all of Soji’s knowledge come from? Is Data’s creator or the descendants of Mudd’s androids down there on her homeworld? What were the androids Flower and Jana doing on the ibn Majid?

It looks like Seven avoided being turned into a Borg queen permanently, though I wonder if she will maintain a mental link with the ex Borg.

Okay, that was awesome.

First and foremost - although not specifically relating to this episode - we have enough hints about the overall season arc that it seems like they're going to stick the landing. Things set in motion from the beginning of the series are starting to pay off. The weirder fankwank ideas - like the Romulans being androids, or this being a Borg origin story - are not in the cards. Perhaps most important of all was Picard's discussion with Soji about "the past being the past, and we make the future." It's very clear this isn't going to be a finale about preventing the AI apocalypse, but instead about reinforcing the core Trek messages of fundamental human equality and inclusion. This, in and of itself, was enough to give the episode a high rating, because it's clear that Chabon & company understand Star Trek.

The episode was also replete with character moments. Narissa was finally given a little bit of depth beyond being a campy villain, and thus became a much more intriguing character. We finally get to the bottom of Rios's pain through a subplot which included a needed bit of levity. Basically everyone on La Sirena got their little moment in the sun to shine in this episode. And I liked the progression across the episode from the entire crew being literally fractured - broken pieces, as the title said - to being unified in purpose and mission by the end, as the truth helped draw everyone to one another.

The only sections I didn't really like - as was the case last week, was the Borg Cube stuff, which felt strangely underwritten and largely unneeded. I suppose Seven and Elnor must come to the rescue of the La Sirena crew some time during the finale, because otherwise all of this would be a waste. Though I'm not sure how they'd get there. Maybe they just follow the Romulan fleet?

Is Narek a real Zhat Vash? It seems like only women get access to the forbidden knowledge.

I don't think Narek is Zhat Vash. I think he was already working in the Borg cube and had access to Soji and since he has a personal connection with Narissa, Narissa simply recruited him to help with her mission.

Second this as well. I also think Narissa and perhaps Oh will be killed by the season finale, but Narek would go on to the next season. Perhaps joining Picard's crew at some point too.

No, Narek was sent to the Borg cube specifically to get close to Soji. We saw him arrive in the first episode, and have been told multiple times that no one really knew what he was doing there because he had no role or function in the project, yet was free to throw his weight around anyway (because that's how the Tal Shiar roll). Narissa did recruit him to help with her mission, but not because he was already on the Cube - she sent him there to try wooing Soji after the attempt to secure Dahj failed.

I guess I was half right then. Thanks. But that still supports the theory that he is not Zhat Vash. Narek never came across to me as a Zhat Vash "true believer" like Oh and Narissa do.
