Spoilers On the subject of Riker/Troi's kid

Captain
Captain
In the Titan novels, we have young Tasha (named after Tasha Yar who was killed by Armus in Skin of Evil).

In Picard, we have Thad (deceased, named after Riker ancestor Thaddius), and Kestra (named after Deanna's older sister who was tragically eaten by a betazoid wolf when she wandered away from the family picnic at Lake El'nar).

In another thread, someone suggested that perhaps Tasha and Thad were the same person, if hypothetically Thad had been assigned female at birth and decided to transition their gender identity at some point later on.

Even though the initial suggestion was made in a disrespectful and irreverent way, I find that the underlying idea deserves some additional consideration. And while there are *other* inconsistencies between the litverse and the Picard show, I think we can all agree that fewer inconsistencies is preferable. So perhaps we can discuss reconciling this one.

First of all, how do the timeframes line up with Tasha from the Titan novels, versus what we learned so far about "Thad" from Picard's Nepenthe? Is there anything else besides assigned gender, and name, that would preclude these two characters representing the same individual person? I've only seen the episode twice so far, but details on Thad's backstory were nebulous on dates, as I recall.

Shame she's not called Tasha now. If Sela was ever to be in this show and was to have an interaction with her. That could have been interesting.
If Kestrel is 14, she would have to be born in 2385 and so we would have heard about it in the novels since we are in early 2387 now.

I don't think that is how she died. :)

The dog ran away to chase the wolf and Kestra followed, and the wolf got Kestra. That was the clear implication from Dark Page. Why else the wolf imagery in Lwaxana's mind chasing off Deana? And also later when Ian and Lwaxana are crying by the lake, the dog is absent also.

The wolf in Lwaxana’s mind is the dog, turned into something more threatening to drive Deanna away. Kestra drowned; that’s why Ian’s hair is visibly wet in the brief shot of him and Lwaxana sobbing. He went into the water to pull her out.

It's never stated in dialog that Kestra drowned. Lwaxana even tells Odo "she died," not "she drowned." There's a louder growling noise overlaid with the dog barking scene in Dark Page which obviously indicates a second canine at the picnic site... Seriously where do you get the drowning idea from?

Kestra was said to have drowned in the Star Trek Chronology, the Star Trek Encyclopedia, The Battle of Betazed and Gods of Night. You're the first person that I know of to suggest that a wolf killed her.

Memory Alpha isn't canon and doesn't seem to cite a specific source for the drowning information. Also, I believe the intent of setting the picnic at Lake El'Nar was so they could use Hedril accidentally stepping in the arboretum pond as the cue to send Lwaxana into the coma from recovering the suppressed memory of the wolf attack.

Do you have the page numbers for Battle of Betazed and Gods of Night? I'd like to look it up. Also it's possible the authors of those works misinterpreted the artistic intent from Dark Page.

Okay I just looked them both up. The Battle of Betazed scene mentioning drowning is Lwaxana's POV. So it could be an author mistake. In Gods of Night "drowned" is from Deanna's POV. So it's either an author mistake or it's explainable in some other way.

You are clearly in the minority. Before today I have not heard anyone interpret the episode that Kestra actually died by wolf attack.

Every single person, both involved behind the scenes and in the audience, for the last 25 years must have misinterpreted the episode. :vulcan:
