Trailer for new Tom Hanks movie - Greyhound

Yeah, I hadn't heard about this film until I saw the trailer earlier today.

It's good to see the Navy finally getting some love that isn't some dumb, giant CGI-fest.

It’s still a giant CG fest, though...

But this element of WWII hasn’t been explored much in recent memory, the use of convoys to get people and supplies across the Atlantic, and the lengths that small escorts went to to keep these ships safe.

Oooo! That looks exciting. Hadn't even heard of it.

I hadn't, either. It's based on a C.S. Forester novel, The Good Shepherd. Hanks is a good twenty years too old for the role -- the main character is older than the typical Navy Lt. Commander, because he kept getting passed over for promotion since there were no captaincies open before Pearl Harbor, but not Hanks' age -- but otherwise, he'll be a pretty good fit. Like Horatio Hornblower, Commander Krause is a tortured character, prone to doubts about his ability and unsure that his crew is with him. Also like Hornblower, he's damned good at what he does.

If you like Forester and his Hornblower novels, you'd like The Good Shepherd.
