James Doohan, 100th birthday

J.T.B.

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
James Montgomery Doohan was born March 3, 1920 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

I grew up really admiring the Scotty character, and his low-key leadership style, confidence, assurance and good humor were no doubt due in large part to Mr. Doohan. If you're inclined, maybe raise a glass of Scotch (or something green) to our favorite Starfleet engineer. I will!

Anytime Kirk and Spock were busy elsewhere, I knew the Enterprise was in good hands with Scotty at the helm. Here's to ya, James!

He did live a long and fruitful life. He could have just as easily been one of the thousands of men who were killed in the D-Day invasion of World War 2. I’m glad he wasn’t.

As a Canadian I'm actually very proud of James Doohan's service record.

He was on the beaches on D-Day as we know. He also was reprimanded for stunt flying, apparently to prove the manoeuvre could be done.

I recall reading somewhere, though I can't find it now, that he also flat out refused the order of a superior officer to fire because they were using live rounds in a training exercise, his men were in the way and the brass was apparently unaware they were live rounds.

I love Scotty as a character and have the utmost respect for Mr. Doohan.

Great thread. I was profoundly sad when Jimmy passed away and raised a glass of scotch at that time, but will be glad to do again, responsibly of course. The glass might even be green (after all, isn't the glass always greener, or something?).

Jimmy was a forcible and formidable presence on screen and his background as a war hero certainly made him as believable as possible in the role. If he had not been so fantastic, Star Trek would have been profoundly different, and not for the better. Scotty is and will always be my favorite character. Here's to ye, Scotty and Mr. Doohan!

He sure accomplished much more in his life than I ever have.

I had forgotten about this milestone. Of course, Jimmy is long past caring about stuff like this, it's more for us at this point. But I still feel funny having mixed feelings about coming up 50 years behind him. I turn 50 next month, and I'm not sure how to feel about that. It bothers me. But it doesn't.

James Doohan was a good actor, but what truly amazes me is his contribution to the Klingon language. From what I've heard, if it weren't for him, Klingon wouldn't have been alien at all. Has anyone else heard anything to that effect?
