So....some **** they made up for a different show.
And considering that the cube was established to be in Romulan hands for 16 years (that many days since assimilation sign), well before the supernova, the deus ex machina opens up more plotholes on why the Romulans didn't use that spiffy teleportation tech to evacuate their planet. Or if Hugh and other Borgs knew about it and hid it from the Romulans, they doomed Romulus. Maybe Hugh and Picard's next meeting won't be as cozy...

Thinking about it more deeply, the episode title - the Impossible Box - works on many different levels.
  • There's the literal puzzle box of Narek
  • There's the "box" of the Artifact
  • There's the mental box that Soji's unconscious put her in (that she eventually escapes)
  • There's the mental box that Narek is in because of the conflict between his feelings for Soji and his mission
  • There's the mental box that Jurati has put herself in because of her own conflicted emotions regarding...whatever we don't know yet
  • There's the mental box that Raffi is trapped inside due to her own guilt
  • There's the mental box that Picard is trapped within due to his memories of the pain of assimilation
This episode just works thematically on so many levels. Really the only main cast who don't fit the theme here are Rios and Elnor - who are both much more supporting characters. Rios is basically just a sounding board for Raffi and Jurati, and Elnor is pretty much the definition of someone who doesn't suffer any mental shackles.

Here I thought it was a reference to Rios not being able to have sex with Jurati.

Yeah. At that point you don't need a transwarp network when you can fold space to anywhere.

To avoid the massive issues that a magic, galaxy-spannng transporter creates, they should have just said, "here's an escape pod and there's just enough juice in these old Borg batteries to create a brief transwarp conduit before they burn out."

Would have still used the lore of the borg, but in a more contained way.

Apparently. But I, too, thought it was unnecessary at this point in the series.

During this episode, I realized I just don't care very much (yet) about most of the newly introuced regulars. Rios (has grown on me once I got over his terrible intro scene) and Elnor yes, Raffi and Jurati (even before the murder), no. Narek, definitely no. Soji, sure, but I'm not terribly interested in her character. Even though she's a mysterious "Destroyer", persecuted, innocent yet with superpowers...

The older shows had a lot of time to build up their characters. To think of what DS9 did during the first two seasons with Kira alone... This show does not have the luxury of making us care for the characters.

DS9 also gave us great introductions for almost all of its characters in its first episode. Picard slow-rolled the introduction of its ensemble and they still haven't gelled or been given much of an opportunity to do much.

Its simply to keep as many subscribers as possible for as long as possible which would not work if they were all released together.

Simple as that really.

Coming up with new fake names to cycle through one free trial after another is becoming exhausting.

Time travel? When Picard and Hugh enter Soji's quarters a computer voice mentions "chronometric activity" on the cube. Just an allusion to FC or foreshadowing?
It will be revealed in a future episode that Picard and Soji went back in time to the Borg cube to stop Rizzo and the Romulans from slaughtering Hugh and Elnor. The computer voice tried to warn the Romulans by warning of "chronometric activity" but no one listened.

Picard: Rios, can you pick us up from the Borg cube?
Rios: We're at Nepenthe! You told us to get you there! Now you want us to go back??
Picard: Long story.

The subsequent episodes of the first season of DS9 were all intended to flesh out the characters, so it wasn't as concise as you say. Indeed, we get little into Odo's character in the pilot. (See Rick Berman)

So Spiner said he was in multiple episodes. And there was that Dorn signature that CBS hastily stated wasn't a sign of Worf's appearance.

We may still have a few surprises left in the show.

It's been confirmed in the tie-in book that Worf took over as captain of the Enterprise after Picard was made an admiral. Meaning the most logical thing to conclude is the Enterprise shows up with Captain Worf.

Michael Dorn finally gets his dream! At least as a cameo.

while each character got a beat, many of them took time to gel. Dax it wasn’t until mid 2nd season, Sisko outside of the pilot took a bit of time. And look at things like TNG how long it took some characters to gel.

That this show really is heavily focused on Jean Luc Picard really makes it harder, not to mention (as you did) that characters are joining not at one point but at multiple points so far during this season.

God, I really hope not for a few reasons. First, after 274 appearances*, the last thing I think we need is more Worf.

Second, why in God's name would he still be Captain of the Enterprise fifteen years later?

Third, why isn't he back on Qo'nos? Hunting targ and drinking bloodwine with Martok?

* not including his appearance on Webster ;)

There was enough time between DS9 ending and Nemesis for Worf to have a 4 year term as ambassador in-universe (DS9 ended 2375 Nemesis was 2379). The experience must have been so horrible he never even considered going back.

Either (1) he caused a scandal in the house of Martok when he hit on Sirella or (2) TNGWorf=/=DS9Worf=/=PicardWorf

Martok remembered what happened with Gowron and dismissed Worf once his term was up. It's hard enough being Chancellor without knowing you have an overly honorable Klingon around ready to duel you to the death the moment you do something even remotely wrong, and Worf has a history of doing that.

Worf never quite got the hint that "Klingon honor" was just an excuse for acting superior and took it quite literally.

This so, so much! GAH. No offense, but he isn't exactly the most compelling char for me, and they really explored him enough.

In my headcanon, Nog is now captain or maybe first officer of the Enterprise... Of course not in the show, R.I.P. Mr. Eisenberg.
