No one other than Narek and Narissa have mentioned this "nest" of others. I don't think it has anything to do with Maddox whatsoever, considering if there were more they should have found out about them when they trashed Maddox's lab.
Are there perhaps others trying to use Borg parts to construct synthetic lifeforms? Or are there synthetics who are trying to enhance themselves?

It seems clear from what Maddox said that sending Dahj to Picard was basically failsafe programming if she ended up being "activated." Her real mission was to be enrolled in the Daystrom Institute for some reason or another - apparently to help Maddox figure out whatever the grand conspiracy was.

It just makes me wonder why Picard of all people, it makes sense but if they truly wanted to keep it secret sending them to Picard is a bit odd.

Indeed it was precisely that which ended up getting Dahj killed, she was plenty fast enough to evade them and escape but instead she stood her ground to defend him instead.

Just sounds a bit counterproductive to me.

We don't know how long Maddox has been "off the grid." If he vanished soon after the Mars attacks, he may have thought Picard had a lot more power to protect Dahj than he really did.

Maybe but its a very narrow oh shit option and Dahj literally had no choice in the matter, she was literally programmed to do it whether its a good idea at the time or not.

Will Soji also feel the pull if she activates, by the looks of it we may find out this week.

I totally understand that part of it and why he would place Picard in their head as a safe option.

I just wonder if that was the only one placed in there because its a bit short sighted if so, especially considering he has some knowledge of just how far the conspiracy goes.

She would have been better off going underground, although that would have screwed up the plot if she had.

Same with Commodore Oh and Maddox, I just cant see how she wouldn't know exactly where Maddox was all along, Raffi found him in no time at all.

She could have grabbed him whenever she wanted.

Just have to put it down to the needs of the plot outweighing everything else, especially with the limited episode number.

Remember that even if Maddox is proud of his creations, they seem to be to a large extent tools which were created for a purpose, rather than just his daughters.

If Dahj went underground, she might survive. But would she have the resources needed to figure out what the grand conspiracy was?

Yeah at first it seemed like they were created out of a need for a heir, which made me think of Data and Lore.

Now its looking like they are just tools to be used and then discarded according to Maddox.

Perhaps that is why Jurati whacked him, either way I think Jurati may know a lot more than she is letting on even before the Commodore approached her, whether that is because she was always Zhat Vash (perfectly placed to setup the attack on Mars) or is their biological mother (is that even an issue with synthetics).

We need to know more about what exactly they really are, exactly what is flesh and blood and what is not, plus how was the synthetic and the biological combined without rejection, did Maddox just rip off the Borg.

Or is it just a case of a fully synthetic skeleton and muscular system with a meat sack around it, if so whose DNA was used for the meat sack.

No one's DNA was used, or it was altered so drastically it no longer counts as that person's DNA. DNA is only made up of A, G, C and T. Remember, Dahj and Soji's likenesses are based on an entirely fictional painting. This was not a painting of a pre-existing real person. As such, no one's DNA would be used without massive alterations.

That would then imply that they are not just tools at all though, to have that much thought and effort into making them look a certain way even though I am sure it was done so that Picard would recognise them.

Plus making them look exactly the same is really risky, if the enemy captures or confirms the appearance of one of them it automatically endangers the other who looks identical, why not make them look different or even one male and one female.

After all we have been led to believe that the outside appearance of Soji and Dahj are flesh and blood human which is why it is so hard to tell they are synthetic, for that to be the case DNA must have been used as a base.

Maddox may have used his own and duplicated the x chromosome

Or Picards or Jurati's.

Did they vat grow the outer body or actually bring it to term, perhaps they found a way to actually grow the outer body on top of the synthetic core underneath.

We don't know the details and that will have a big bearing on just how far Maddox went and how many laws he broke.

The hand phaser Seven uses in the opening, seems to be the same type used by Starfleet Security on Mars during that flash back.

The episode explains a character's motivation twice because of how they structured the episode. They put the Icheb flashback in the beginning of the episode to explain Seven's motivation for revenge, and then have Seven explain her motivation for revenge again (for the characters in-universe, but also to the viewers) during the standoff scene with Bejazzle. They just showed and told the audience the same thing at two different points of the episode. And this is a series that's already really slowly paced as it is.
^^^
They have a habit of this type of thing - over the first three episodes we saw (and were told) no less then five different ways:

- Picard left the 1701-E to lead a recuse/relocation effort for Romulus.

- The Mars/Utopia Planitia Shipyards were attacked and destryed by Synths (92,000 dead - Parts of Mars still burning 15 years later).

- Romulan rescue mission cancelled.

- Picard resigned in protest,

Other things they could have shown - but didn't:

- More on WHY Raffi was 'fired' from Star Fleet.

- Picard is paying Capotain Rios some 'fee'; and Rios by his own words is "Expensive". Yet there no scene of Picard negotiating any form of payment/ or mention of what/why the 24th century went back to using money again in the first place. Hell in the ONE short scene we have between Rios and Picard talking about what Picard wants to do where he wants to go - Rios seems already hell bent to leave.
^^^
But again, we saw no price negotiation; or what Picard is using as 'money' for this transaction.
