My biggest disappointment out of this whole experience is that Jammer isn't on board. He's not a Roddenberry Purist. He's a DS9 and BSG guy. Oh well.

Agreed. Jammer has been an essential part of my Trek viewing experience since I was a kid. Reading his reviews went hand in glove with watching an episode, and still does. But gosh, this review makes me feel like my parents are getting divorced. Or something.

Honestly , they shouldn't have used Maddox at all. Too much fan service and not enough story service.

No, they had to use Maddox. If the show said, "Hey, we're searching for the greatest cyberneticist in the galaxy, the only one who could possibly have created a new Data" and they DIDN'T use Maddox, then the hyperfans would be up in arms.

Besides, far better to use a character with a little bit of actual history than just inventing a new rando. Since some version of that character needed to exist for their story to work (and I use the word "work" loosely), then going with the established Maddox was the smart and correct thing to do.

EDIT: This is the first time in the current era that he's ever given an episode 1.5 stars out of four. The lowest he ever gave Discovery was 2. So much for "Everyone likes Picard better than Discovery!"

Jammer has always been smart, perceptive and insightful. For him to be "on board" with this show would be a crushing disappoint and would call into question his decades of good taste.

Alas you weren't alone, the alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die newsgroup wasn't exactly an empty corner of the internet. The hate towards Wesley, and many people who directed it at Wil Wheaton, really hurt him.

Personally I loved the character. So did Larry Niven.

Wesley was annoying and badly written in Season 1 (as was everything else.) He got a little bit better in Season 2, then a lot better...and then he left.

In fact, the decreasing in Wesley's annoyance factor is directly proportional to the series as a whole improving.

Out of curiosity, what are your Trek leanings? I'm guessing TOS, TNG, and DS9?

Yeah, could have done without the gore, but it was a First Contact tribute scene....maybe tone down the dexter levels of splatter.

Space villain ex-girlfriend was...maybe not good casting. She was a fine actress, but was waaaayyyy too close looking to Deanna.

I would never say TOS is too far in the past. The vast majority of pop culture tributes and parodies of Star Trek use Kirk, Spock and TOS as their characters and settings. TNG is the second most legendary Trek in the eyes of the world at-large if I had to judge the relative popularity of both series based on how often I've seen them spoofed on TV, in cartoons or in comics and artwork.
