Wilson Cruz quits social media

It would seem that Chris Pine has the right idea - he's not on social media.

Remember when Bob Orci tried to engage with Trekkies on Trekmovie.com? He was mercilessly heckled and trolled to the point he told a fan to "fuck off" which did the rounds on clickbait sites minus any relevant context. That way lies madness.

Well the "fans" that did that did act like dickholes.

Going through the thread which triggered that, I only saw the one outright troll. It seemed many were just confused by his ambiguous tweet - and they seemed to be fans of the show. This might be a bit of an overreaction.

If anyone was going to quit I'd expect it to be Rapp, who cops a lot of abuse and tries to engage the trolls.

I loved how Jason Issaccs handled the trolls.

It is a shame. I remember and loved the days when JMS was so very very active in the usenet B5 community.

Facebook, Twitter, and their ilk are not Usenet Newsgroups. Neither are they boards, nor are they email list-servers.

Newsgroups, boards, and email list-servers can degrade into nests of vipers (e.g., Cake Central, a cake-decorating board I walked away from "with extreme prejudice"). Facebook, Twitter, and their ilk started at "nest of vipers," and went downhill from there.

^I think that may be the biggest issue with social media. When there's minimal likelihood that one will get in trouble for saying something they maybe shouldn't say, one may be more likely to say it.

Social media makes me hate my friends and people I admire. Actually it makes me hate humans in general. Keyboard warriors.

Quitting Twitter is a good choice.

I can agree with both of those thoughts. I am in a debate about quitting failbook but then I'd lose all my groups like Dr Who and Person Of Interest the only two I'm signed into and my model contacts. Just it would make things a bit harder to do things like shoots and stuff.

Yeah, unfortunately I have a good amount of friend fragmentation between Facebook and Twitter, so trying to shut down either one would mean losing contact with a lot of people I value.

the only good thing about twitter is the copious amounts of adult content the rest is all garbage :rommie:

I think Twitter and Facebook both have their uses, but there are a lot of whack-a-doos out there and if your accounts are public, and especially if you have any level of name-recognition, they will find you.

How exactly does a cake decorating board turn into a cesspool? I'm fascinated to know.

In regards to social media I only have Facebook and really I just keep it to stay in touch with close friends. I whittled Mt friends list to 30 people and it will probably stay there. I used to be a prolific user until I realised what a trap it was. Now I might log on once a day if that. Facebook is dangerous and it shocks me that people use it so recklessly.

He seems to be very popular for reasons I have not yet worked out.

He is basically a self-help guru and sort of right wing philosopher who got ahead by realizing that a lot of young men have started to fall behind in modern society or had issues not really being addressed in modern society and moved in to make money off of them. Basically Tony Robbins if Tony Robbins might also have been homophobic.

Essentially, it boiled down to professionals (and I use the term in the strictest literal sense of "one who derives one's principal source of revenue from a given activity," because their attitudes were anything but professional) publicly flaming amateurs (again, I use the word in the strictest literal sense of "one who pursues a given activity for the love of that activity; I'm starting to sound like John Houseman, in the made-for-TV movie, Christmas Without Snow) simply for being amateurs.

And I said, "nest of vipers," not "cesspool." Don't insult cesspools.

BTW, the first rule of edible printing is, "you don't run anything but edible ink in that printer"; the second rule of edible printing is, "You DO NOT run anything but edible ink in that printer." And you still don't talk about Fight Club. Oh, yes, and "disco dust" is not good eats.

When I left Cake Central, I also took down every cake picture I was hosting myself.

Please point out any homophobia for me.
