Many years ago I ran a thread called Never seen TOS scenes that explored parts of Star Trek we never got to see. These were photoshopped images of events or things that happened offscreen or in TOS prehistory yet presented as if they had actually been filmed back in the day but then lost or forgotten. This was quite sometime before TOS-R was made so the concept was somewhat similar only my intent was for the images to appear as they had been created back in the day, but sometimes with the conceit that a bit more time and money were available.

The images were usually done to remain consistent with what TOS had already established, but sometimes I would conjure up something strictly for fun for the sake of absurdity and off-the-wall humour.

I thought it could be fun again to revisit this idea and so here we are.

So to start off here is something lifted from another subject I'm pursuing in another forum section. It's based on the idea of, What if TAS episodes had actually been filmed live-action?

    "Beyond The Farthest Star."

It is conceivable that a physical version of the alien pod ship seen in the animated episode could have been constructed for a live-action episode. It mightn't have been quite as elaborate as the animated version, but it still could have looked quite alien and just as massive as the Fesarius or the doomsday machine relative to the Enterprise. The real challenge would have been the alien ship's interior which might have dictated the use of a matte painting along with a few set pieces. A live-action version of the story might have had the crew using space suits rather than life support belts and they likely would have beamed directly into the alien ship rather than onto the exterior hull to cut down on f/x shots.

Note: because I do not yet have a 3D model of the TOS Enterprise I used my conjectural refit model as a substitute to get the idea across. I then desaturated the colours and added a touch of film grain to make the images look a bit more like DVD sceencaps.

    That is cool.

    Infinite Vulcan, next on slate?

Have him face off against the giant Apollo...

Seriously, though, those images are great.

I recall some images I did for this years ago and I might try to update some of them.

    - Pike era images
    - Kirk accepting command from Pike
    - WNMHGB era images
    - Fleet Captain Pike before his accident and Spock with Pike before embarking on the TOS 5-year mission
    - Other Vulcans and Andorians in Starfleet
    - TAS scenes (like above) as live-action TOS scenes
    - Captain Robert T. April era inages
    - Absurd moments in TOS and TAS out of continuity and just for fun.

Very cool. But why couldn't they have used life support belts instead of space suits in live action TOS?

The special effects at the time simply wouldn't have done them justice, and they hadn't been created yet.

Actually I believe they already had the idea, like the holodeck, but they thought the vfx would be too involved.

Have you a link to the old thread, just so I can have a browse?

Problem is I no longer use Photobucket so a lot of the old images won’t show anymore. I can go through the ones I still have on file and repost them, but I was hoping to make new and updated images.

Some of the old ones were quite funny so I can look for those. I did some 1960s era crossovers for fun with The Munsters, Superman, Batman, Doctor Who, Bewitched, Mission: Impossible, Lost In Space and Space Ghost for example.

I would like to post something new every day, but thats not possible. Some of the images take time to put together. The images I posted upthread took quite some time because I had to actually make a 3D model of the alien ship from “Beyond The Farthest Star” first before I could make live-action images of it.

Sometimes I make something showing an alternate or more fleshed out version of what we already saw in TOS, but I try to make it look as if it had actually been done back in the day. This is similar to the idea behind what was seen later in TOS-R only the approach differed.

The Andorian in command looks especially authentic!

    "Beyond The Farthest Star"

Alien entity uses Enterprise's phasers at full power to destroy the pod ship. An interesting note: in Alan Dean Foster's adaptation of this episode the ship's phasers actually cut the alien pod ship into pieces that fell out of orbit rather than disintegrate the ship whole.

Later the Enterprise escapes the negative star mass and leaving the alien entity stranded behind.

    T
rade secret—the negative star mass is actually a Christmas Tree ornament.

A different look and with Deforest Kelley already in the cast.

If TOS had retained "The Cage" aesthetic.

While not strictly TOS related what if another one of these things showed up? These images were actually inspired by the TNG novel Vendetta.

And just for fun Kirk doesn't know if he is dreaming or wonders where he finds himself.

the scene where kirk salutes the romulan commander in balance of terror when the commander destroys his ship. I know they filmed it, but edited it out for "reasons." love to have seen it included in the episode. kirk showing respect.

There is a photograph of that somewhere. It might well be online, but I swear I also saw it reprinted in a book somewhere.

I'm woefully underskilled in photo-editing so horrible image but hopefully it comes through. I did find the Conrad image (with an older Scotty in the background on line and added Martin for Scotty).

I think some folks like me have thought about Conrad in Captain's Chair. And maybe this has been done before.

Part of the trick with Photoshop is to be able to match skin tones and having the shadowing lining up in the same directions.
