Five-Year Mission: Looking Back on the Golden Age of Star Trek Games

It's funny how we now kind of take for granted things like checkpoints, being able save during missions, etc. Games were so damn hard back in the day. I actually don't think I could finish many of them if I were to try now.
It took years, but I finally finished all missions. Then some 10 years later, I tried it again, and finished them all very quickly! That was such a rewarding experience!

I think I have the box somewhere in the archive, had totally forgotten. Probably the worst Star Trek game I played so far.

That was a great read. Although for me personally, I actually felt the Activision era to be the weakest. I never was into RTS games, so I never got into the Armada games, and I guess out of that list I only ever got to playing Elite Force and Bridge Commander. So, more out of that list that never took my interest. That's got more to do with my preferences though, as I'm more of a retro player and actually preferred games from the previous eras.

It has always puzzled me that aside the the Trek game that was tied to the reboot and Star Trek Online, that there hasn't been any other active efforts in making Trek games. I mean, even when TOS was long off the air, we got so many games based on the series, well into the 80's, so it's not like it should stop them from making games. In fact, I think it could be argued that games have been a great way to keep interest levels going without anything on the air. It was actually my interest in old Trek text adventures that got me interested in Trek overall. In the mid 80's with our first computer, I had gotten hold of one of those text adventures and thought it was so cool and was bitten by the bug, so to speak.

I'd love for Trek to get a fully-fledged modern RPG with different game modes depending on the scenarios. In-ship could be Bridge Commander style, where it would switch to a Mass-Effect style Away Team for ground-based exploration with character and NPC interactions. There's so much they could do with a modern game engine.

I was very disappointed i never got to experience ConQuest online. I enjoy the idea of it but was never able to play it. Generations, Klingon Honour Guard and Birth of the Federation were fantastic for a young fan to play, still to this day i play them. When the likes of Elite Force and Bridge Commander came about, i remember being so excited and i adored playing them. I still make maps for Elite Force from time to time! The storylines were compelling and the gameplay fantastic. I wasn't as into Elite Force 2 as i was 1, but maybe a Picard themed Elite Force 3 might be interesting. I also still play Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations mod, many hours spent in complete enjoyment. I found the Starfleet Command series repetitive and didn't really enjoy those. I enjoyed aspects of Hidden Evil, would have liked to have seen another film based game, apart from Generations and Hidden Evil, I would have loved a First Contact or even Nemesis (at a push!). I enjoyed The Fallen to an extent, the lack of Sisko for the voice over let it down for me. I really did enjoy Dominion Wars, once again many hours of enjoyment! Legacy felt too clunky for me, the same storyline but a change of captain after a few missions didn't particularly do anything for me. I also enjoyed Away Team in a guilty pleasure kind of way. Think my personal top 5 would be 1. Bridge Commander 2. Elite Force 1 3. Birth of the Federation 4. Armada 2 5. Generations

I spent hours downloading the latest EF maps back then!
And I was sooo looking forward to FC (they announced it with Generations)... someone should get the files and make the game now. And Vulcan Fury as well!
