How do you feel about deaging/'resurrected' actors for classic roles?

The time and talent and technology to make it work well are still very expensive, and largely reserved for blockbuster film budgets. I'm quite surprised they were able to do as much as they did with Data.

I've never liked the idea of "resurrecting" an actor with CG. The idea of putting someone's face on a performance that isn't theirs seems very distasteful to me.

 

Opinions vary. Instead of recasting a character with a new actor just create a new character. for the new actor to play.

Shatner too old to play Kirk?

Stop using Kirk, retire the character permanently.

 

If they do the Pike series, I could imagine they bringing back the Character for one episode, as a guest star as a Pike would have to hand over the keys to the Enterprise to him.

 

De-aging is fine, if it is done right.

Resurrection by CGI? I think it needs to be okayed by the actors before they pass on. I think Tarkin and Leia were the exception to such a rule. Otherwise, recast the roles to new people.

 

Why?

 

De-aging a cast member for a scene relevant to the plot in a movie? No problem.

Reviving Peter Cushing in Star Wars? Ok, they tried. It was relevant to the plot. Whatever.

Digitally replacing actors who are either dead, too old, or can't be bothered? Not so much.

It starts getting into a "we weren't thinking about whether we should" situation.

But outside of that, I'm all in.

 

I think that it was a mix of the producers of the films being stuck, and those particular characters being relevant to the films they were in. There was a Tarkin at the end of Revenge of the Sith played by someone else, but that Tarkin was 20 years removed from the events in A New Hope. The Tarkin in Rogue One is basically within days of A New Hope. It would look weird to recast with the events within the two movies being in such close proximity to one another. Same with Leia in Rise of Skywalker; it was too close to The Last Jedi as it was set on year later, plus they supposedly had already filmed some of her scenes already.

 

Just sayin', in any other genre a character could have been recast and it wouldn't have been a big deal. Sci-Fi fandom does not allow filmmakers this luxury.

 

Carrie did not film any material for Ep9. She died more than six months before JJ was even hired to direct the film. Every scrap of her TRoS appearance came from existing footage.
