Spoilers Everyday life on earth

And Mars had one of the great legal documents in human history if not known history period: the Fundamental Declarations of the Martian Colonies, a (likely) 22nd century document that must have supported a large enough local population for it to be considered important in posterity.

I'm debating whether to go into $200,000 indentured servitude to Elon Musk to become a Martian citizen :D

Which makes me wonder if this is something they aren't simply allowing to fall to the wayside? It wouldn't be the first thing they've let go of.

You would think with a bustling society, that there would be schools good enough for the girls from "Children of Mars" to go to on Mars, instead of being separated from their parents.

Now a nice orbital condo overlooking Saturn, that would be nice.

You could have a your own 10 cubic km box overlooking saturn, no problem with land there. you could have 400 billion orbital houses never getting within 20km of each other at each level, you could have literally trillions of orbiting space houses that would be invisible from anywhere else.

We actually know precious little about the exploration and colonization of Mars in Trek:

2032 - The Ares IV mission mysteriously vanishes from Martian orbit, stranding two astronauts on the surface.
2069 - Utopia Planitia has been founded before this date and the first permanent human settlement on Mars already exists.
2103 - A milestone is reached with the human colonization of Mars having been proclaimed official, with enough people on the planet to be at least a partially self-sustaining community.
2100s(?) - The Fundamental Declarations of the Martian Colonies are drafted.
2150s - Terraforming efforts have led to oxygen levels in the Martian atmosphere being high enough that some areas are safe for visitation and travel without pressure suits for limited periods of time.
2100s-2200s - The Utopia Planitia Shipyards are founded.
circa 2235 - Mira Romaine is born in one of the Martian Colonies.
2367 - The Mars Defense Perimeter is smashed and easily defeated as the Borg cube with Locutus approached Earth.
2385 - The Synth Attack kills over 92,000 people and sets the planet's atmosphere ablaze.

For all we know, the Declaration was significant in making Mars and by precedent all Earth colonies subservient to Earth rule... All we know is that it's about the rights of the individual in face of court proceedings somehow. Might be about the Martians deciding that the knifeman of '05 ought to be convicted in Earth rather than subjected to local mob rule or freed because he was a pal of the Governor Fatcat. (Or about it being acceptable to convict nonhumans of crimes, even if in absentia!)

Earth was settling planets outside the Sol system before the 2103 date that Harry Kim considered significant in "The 37s". Perhaps Mars always was considered not worth much investment, or then set aside for terraforming which was incompatible with habitation and Home Rule and all?

Seems like there is money as Rio make mention of hiring and being expensive.

Picard just talks shit it seems.

Likely being in the ivory tower called Enterprise makes him out of touch with everyday people.

I want to see my hometown in 2399. I hope we still have the world's largest neon star.

Knowing Trek, though, Roanoke probably has a floating holographic star 100 feet tall.

Never got to see my hometown in Trek but Oklahoma at least got to be shown on "Enterprise."

So people in the Navy have no concept of money because they think in Red, White, & Blue? If they retcon money back in the Federation, then so be it. But for the time being, I’m thinking it’s for use outside the Federation.
