Even if everything is free, there are still limited resources, like physical space (do you remember when they proposed to Picard to collaborate to a projet for creating a new continent?). How can one get more of it, for example?
And stil they wanted to raise a new continent.Space on Earth isn't limited, unless the planet has 50-60 billion on it. Space with modern day technology is obviously limited, people want to live in big cities with strong economies. But with transport technology and shuttle craft? I can't see space being limited. I also imagine that a lot of smaller cities all over the world now have these giant sky scrapers with lots of living space for people.
Perhaps when they say there is no money, it actually means they no longer have hard currency as such. All payments are made using electronic devices, like we are starting to do today with things like ApplePay. Maybe these applications have finally done away with fiat currency
PICARD: This is the 24th century. Material needs no longer exist.
OFFENHOUSE: Then what's the challenge?
PICARD: The challenge, Mr. Offenhouse, is to improve yourself. To enrich yourself.
I'm not aware of Picard ever saying there's no money.
And stil they wanted to raise a new continent.
So? It's a scientific project, it never seemed to be about making space for people to live.
Yeah, it pretty much did.
So? It's a scientific project, it never seemed to be about making space for people to live. Space isn't really an issue with the amount of space stations, giant arcologies, colonies near and far..
Ahh yes, I remembered the second line, and the start of the first.
Picard as a student of history and fluent latin speaker will of course know what Lily means by money, any finance in the 24th century (like Beverley's account on the enterprise) doesn't meet the same connotations of money as it does today.
That’s how many Borg there are after assimilating humanity 200 years earlier. We have no idea how many hoomans live on Earth at any given time period.Agreed entirely. It had nothing to do with creating space. FC establishes the population on Earth to be around 9 billion. Why would they need more space?
Did anyone notice the Golden Gate Bridge covered in solar panels?
The one funny thing (to me) is that Dahj sees Picard's face on a series of screens in a shop. A retail shop. A retail shop selling electronics in 2399. I love it.![]()
