Spoilers Everyday life on earth

Even if everything is free, there are still limited resources, like physical space (do you remember when they proposed to Picard to collaborate to a projet for creating a new continent?). How can one get more of it, for example?

Space on Earth isn't limited, unless the planet has 50-60 billion on it. Space with modern day technology is obviously limited, people want to live in big cities with strong economies. But with transport technology and shuttle craft? I can't see space being limited. I also imagine that a lot of smaller cities all over the world now have these giant sky scrapers with lots of living space for people.

And stil they wanted to raise a new continent.

Perhaps when they say there is no money, it actually means they no longer have hard currency as such. All payments are made using electronic devices, like we are starting to do today with things like ApplePay. Maybe these applications have finally done away with fiat currency

No.

PICARD: This is the 24th century. Material needs no longer exist.

OFFENHOUSE: Then what's the challenge?

PICARD: The challenge, Mr. Offenhouse, is to improve yourself. To enrich yourself.

I'm not aware of Picard ever saying there's no money. Jake said he didn't have money, but Dax clearly does have money, you don't need to partake in money to live a good life - nobody goes bankrupt due to medical bills, or homeless because they can't afford a house, or hungry, or have their internet cut off, or be unable to go climbing in yosemetie, but if you do want money nobody's stopping you.

I'm not aware of Picard ever saying there's no money.

He says it in First Contact:

Picard: The economics of the future are somewhat different. You see, money doesn't exist in the 24th century.

Lily Sloane: No money? You mean, you don't get paid?

Picard: The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force of our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity. Actually, we're all like yourself and Dr. Cochrane.

Ahh yes, I remembered the second line, and the start of the first.

Picard as a student of history and fluent latin speaker will of course know what Lily means by money, any finance in the 24th century (like Beverley's account on the enterprise) doesn't meet the same connotations of money as it does today.

Yeah, it pretty much did.

yep.

MARIE: Your friend Louis wants you to contact him as soon as you're settled.
PICARD: Is he still trying to raise the ocean floor?
MARIE: Oh yes, he's very excited about it. He's been made a supervisor now, as his wife is constantly reminding anyone who'll listen.
ROBERT: I see no good reason why the Earth should have another subcontinent.
PICARD: It's really quite exciting, actually, if you understand the potential of exploring a new world on our own planet.

So? It's a scientific project, it never seemed to be about making space for people to live. Space isn't really an issue with the amount of space stations, giant arcologies, colonies near and far..

Agreed entirely. It had nothing to do with creating space. FC establishes the population on Earth to be around 9 billion. Why would they need more space?

Please....I beg all of you......don't do this.

Considering that in many tedious 'but how can society without money work' threads one of the most pressing concerns of the pro-money faction seems to be how a moneyless society could ever fairly distribute beach houses, raising an another continent might be a valid solution to the most pressing economic inequality of the 24th century.

That’s how many Borg there are after assimilating humanity 200 years earlier. We have no idea how many hoomans live on Earth at any given time period.

Did anyone notice the Golden Gate Bridge covered in solar panels?
The one funny thing (to me) is that Dahj sees Picard's face on a series of screens in a shop. A retail shop. A retail shop selling electronics in 2399. I love it.

How was the 23rd century powered? It looked clean and pristine too, not smoggy. What was so catastrophic with energy sources that were clearly working just fine through the 2370s that they now had to re-invent the long-ditched notion solar panels (of which are not made with solar power as a source, have a limited half-life, add to landfills - do they just use the transporter to move them into space)? Quick, make a dozen 30-episode sequels to explain this!! (Actually, future centuries would have future means to generate power like fusion and stuff that woulds make solar panels look infantile... why is the latter tail-end of the 24th century regressing? Do they self-clean every time a bird flying overhead drops one? Dust accumulating will hamper efficacy... are there windshield wipers or do they magically self-clean?)

Art project. Even if earth used solar at large scale, it would be out in the deserts (and in space).

A single warp core from a runabout could generate enough power for the domestic needs of the planet outside of replicators, and 800sqm of solar wouldn’t do a thing to approach that.

Great, now that we've established that money no longer exists, can we please get back to whether or not Starfleet is a military organization...and admit that it isn't.

(...or, rather, you get back to it. I'm off to green-er pasteurs hehehe)
