Spoilers Everyday life on earth

It's not about taking orders; it's about fact vs. opinion. In your headcanon, they may be different universes, but that is not how they are approached by everyone working on these shows. Discovery and Picard are in the same universe as TOS, just as TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT are. That is a fact.
Does the original Constitution class Enterprise have straight or swept back pylons in this one and same universe?

That is a fact.

It’s a new day with new writers who live in an entirely different world with different experiences than thirty or fifty years ago. It is silly to treat these shows as anything other than new interpretations of older material. Doesn’t make them good or bad, or not Trek. But they aren’t and can never be that Trek we grew with all those years ago. Or honestly, any kind of true continuation as the people who made those shows are long gone.

We live in a world where we cannot let go of the past (unless it is something actually important like the Holocaust). Corporations have seized on this to peddle their wares. Everybody from entertainment producers to car companies use it to take advantage.

So everything made after Roddenberry's death can't be a true continuation of Star Trek? Just because someone different is in charge, doesn't mean it's an entirely new universe.
Disingenuous to compare two one-off actresses against something that was part of the universe for fifty-plus years.
One visual change for another. Or how about Klingons having smooth foreheads to Klingons having ridges? Again, this doesn't mean it's an entirely different universe.

Depends, are there any writers left from the 60’s, 80’s or 90’s left? You see it as a continuation, I see it as a new interpretation based on what I’m watching. How you want to hash it out is up to you, not CBS.

Some would argue that TWOK wasn't a true continuation of Gene's vision of Trek.

Certainly I can see the argument to be made. TOS is a 60s vision, TNG 80s, etc. Ideas about technology, society and humanity would have changed as well.

Some times it is easier to have different continuities that short it all out.

The only people that CBS’ mandates apply to is people who work for CBS.

Yup.

Honestly, I'm weird. I don't worry about what universe it's in. If I'm engaged with the story then it ultimately is inconsequential what another show does.

Regardless of universe, I’m looking forward to next Thursday.

Sorry. I don’t take orders from CBS.
NO, and it can be whatever you want it to be, but for purposes of group discussion about a show we're all watching, there has to be some protocol so it all makes sense. I can believe every single show and movie takes place in its own reality, or that the plywood seen in some bad camera shots in TOS shows Enterprise was made outta wood, but in the end we have to have some common ground.

We might not agree on how the visuals look, but it's the same narrative continuity, and in that continuiity the writers have been all over the place when it came to money. There clearly is some kind of money, but it isn't necessarily money exactly as we'd know it, at least it is earned, allotted and governed in some other manner.

This is what I'm talking about. Use whatever headcanon you want, but acknowledge that it is your own, personal headcanon.

A retail shop. A retail shop selling electronics in 2399

Next to an advert for next year’s PADD tech today.

I live having PADD on screen - has the spelling ever appeared before, or has it always been in speech?

Unless the staff are holograms, I can't see anyone choosing to work in retail (or whatever the moneyless equivalent is) for the love of it.

Why wouldnt they be holodeck style non sentient holograms? Heck even in 2020 shop staff are going the way of the dodo.

There clearly is some kind of money

Crusher has an account on enterprise so that’s not revolutionary. That money is no longer the driving force doesn’t contradict that. In the western world food supply is no longer the driving forces was in Neolithic times, yet we still have food.

How about Dahj's phone, with pop up hologram screen for video calls? Pretty sure this is the second "modern" phone seen in all of Trek, the other being one blink-and-you'll-miss-it guy they run past in Into Darkness seemingly videoing the Vengeance crash aftermath in San Francisco.
If The Expanse can have mobile phones, so they figure so can Star Trek. And The Expanse is roughly in same timeline as Star Trek (2350s or so, I believe)

They are not selling them, it is a replicentre for electonics.
And then they made it extremely clear there was some kind of money in various episodes.

The usual collection of conflicting references.

Some people enjoy "shopping."

I agree with you. But maybe the currency model is not the same as ours. Maybe they use different kind of currency system. Like Credit system. Where you have to work for the exchange of "credit" that give you the right to get some kind of luxury. The different is that credit doesn't inflate. It also doesn't work as currency exchange. You can't exchange Earth Credit with Ferengi gold and vice versa. You can't give credit to another person, like your children for allowance. So basically credit is credit. You work, you get credit, you can use it to enjoy some luxury that offered by Earth Service provider.

With luxury mean that you can get food and basic need like clothes freely. You may get a standard house. Maybe like a small, cramped apartment like in Hongkong. But if you want a castle like in Picard, or a luxurious mansion like Riker's, then you have to provide enough credit for it. Maybe explore strange new world, fight a war for Federation, etc can give you more credit than ordinary people who work as a clerk. You also have to use credit to enjoy Picard luxurious and tasty Wine, although the service providers like Picard Vineyard doesn't get anything from you. They get their own credit from Federation Government for their service. And of course, you need to spend credit to enjoy a luxurious entertainment in a holodeck. This way Federation can prevent you from becoming a Hikikomori person who spend his entire life in a holodeck.
