I imagine an explosion like that, that involved a retired-Starfleet officer was quickly deemed a Starfleet matter. Like I said before, maybe Picard has a do not treat/resuscitate form on file. If he was unconscious then he was just transferred home. Or the doctors had already looked him over and deemed him not seriously injured.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I didn't need to see those things happen.

The Romulans haven't been used as much in the last 20 years, due to most of Star Trek have been Pre-TOS until now. It would be nice to have them responsible for the synth attack. They'd have the motive. If it weakened the Federation, if it made the Federation more timid, it would reduce them as a threat and it would reduce them as an influence.

Also, I would put it rogue elements of Starfleet -- not Section 31 -- becoming so corrupt that they'll do anything to stop aid to the Romulans, an enemy, and would love to muscle Picard out because he represents everything they disagree Starfleet should be.

The Romulans were used as moustache twirling villains in 2 straight movies and were refered to in Enterprise. It's not so much that they haven't been used as much as they've been poorly used.
 
Having Section 31 as the villains in Picard would be funny since that’s what the novels in the last few years have been dealing with. Picard unknowingly being involved in a Section 31 plot which got him in a lot of dodo.

Says someone who waxes nostalgic about their well past their prime luggage that is now threatening to fall apart, about all the places they went with it, not willing to admit that maybe it's time they got a new set. If your suitcase can no longer carry what you want to put in it, maybe its time.

Not at all. I was merely explaining why I think Discovery doesn’t challenge what’s come before, as a counterpoint to your claim that it does. That doesn’t mean I can’t also enjoy it, or feel that it enriches the franchise. I like both the original and the new BSG, for example. They’re completely incompatible universes, of course, and I don’t think the new one helps me reflect in any way on the old, or challenges my previous conceptions of anything from it. But I do enjoy them both, in very different ways, and I think that’s a common experience with reboots and remakes. Discovery isn’t as drastic a departure, obviously. But in itself, that has no bearing on whether I like the show or not.

Plus while Section 31 would have no problem weakening the Romulans, they wouldn't do anything to weaken their hand or the Federation's or have Mars devastated. It's not their MO. They want to weaken others, not themselves.

I’ve always wanted to see the Romulans more fleshed out. TNG and DS9 made them out to be such a great superpower, methodical and cunning, but ever strategic and reserved. If they did orchestrate this as a bold tactical move for a change, that would be delicious and I’d love to see it. But I’d also like to see the political ramifications it has within the Empire, which I’ve always found so fascinating. I think Nemesis, had it been a better movie, could have explored this, too.

Well, I just meant even a full-out reboot can enrich a franchise. The new BSG definitely enriched the BSG franchise. But in the case of Discovery, I agree, but not because of all the visual changes. I just don’t find the stories compelling or interesting in any way.

The visual changes are irksome to a degree, but they aren't the reason the show failed for me. The stories just seemed so poorly thought out and the surprises telegraphed from a mile away.

I hope in season three that Sonequa Martin-Green gets material that is worthy of her considerable talent. Not stale rehashes of other characters journeys and poorly written monologues.
