I think there’s something being lost in these discussions. For some folks, myself included, this first episode of Picard serves to show what, in our eyes, Discovery could have been. I was as giddy with excitement leading up to the premiere of DSC as I was for PIC. But Discovery let me down, much as Into Darkness and Beyond let me down after I initially loved ST09. Saying that isn’t “hating” on anything, and neither is comparing our disappointments to Picard now. Part of what a lot of us are feeling today is relief—relief that this show seems to get us. And I understand that Discovery gets some other folks, and that’s great. It’s an amazing time to be a Star Trek fan. That doesn’t mean we have to like all of it, or can’t mention the parts we don’t like or how we wish they had been handled instead. I think that’s quite literally what fandom is about and always has been. IDIC. :)

I don’t see it as tearing discovery down. I think the current production teams are learning and improving. Dsc season 2 was better then season 1. Picard ep 1 was better then discovery season 2. Hopefully dsc season 3 is better then pic season 1.

I think we’re just seeing an evolution of the people running Trek and not bashing any show.
I'll just move on. Enjoy Picard, everyone.

Amy...didn't age well...like...at all

Any was ahead of ifs time it aged so well.
Honestly, three times a day reading the anger mess that is social media, the phrase ‘what’s a Nubian? Bitch you almost made me laugh’ goes through my head.

I mean Smith hit the wacky baccy too hard sunshine later, but Amy is decent.

Gotta be Lore. :)
You do have to wonder where he is though. It's not like he was destroyed, and if they had access to him, why couldn't they have just used him for research. They said that they couldn't replicate Data's design, but they had access to a functioning positronic brain anyway. Even though he had some problems, he still worked fine.

The man will probably always struggle with getting the credit he deserves. I think if he is going to get schlacked for failures of Trek then he deserves credit for success.

I don't think the quote was about him, but honestly it's valid there too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm E X T R E M E L Y glad he's left Trek in his rear view mirror, but from the interviews I've seen in the years after ENT ended, he and Braga were the only two gatekeepers who kept it from being so much worse (apparently, UPN was very serious about that Boy Band of the Week concept to attract the teeny boppers watching Smallville and Buffy on the WB at the time :shifty:). He was basically the Severus Snape of Star Trek, a good guy taking the L to keep Trek watchable. I doubt anyone will name their children Rick Brannon after two of the bravest men they know, however ;)

But in all seriousness, Berman did have a big part to play in the success of what Trek was in the 80s and 90s. Should he have been been writing half the episodes for Enterprise? Not at all. But he wasn't the evilest evil to ever evil and I don't think he deliberately tanked the franchise unlike certain other show runners on HBO who shall remain nameless.

To get back to the episode. We saw b4 in a drawer. We know androids and synths are part of the story. I still think b4 will come into play before the end of the season. He wasn’t shown for just fanservice. He has a role to play

It's views on...erm..fluidity...when it comes to sexual orientation, where problematic even back then. the thought to get a lesbian straight if she just met the right man.... look, I hope KS didn't intend that message, but...well...his other films - including Tusk and Yoga Hosers - were better

Maddox has to be working with someone. He isn’t smart enough to do this on his own.

Of course he is. When we last saw him, he was the Federation's foremost living expert in cybernetics and that was over thirty years ago.

Frankly, I find it a little ridiculous that the "no one has ever been able to recreate Data!" bit is still a thing in this timeframe. It's pretty implausible, but I can go with it since it's literally necessary for the premise of the show to exist.

That may have been his role. To show how serious the Federation ban on Synths was that they essentially killed a simpleton in their fear.
