I can believe how unhinged some of these people are.

I can't. Mecharandom posted a 3 minute video about her feelings of the first fifteen minutes of the episode. Because I'm not about to give Doomcock the clicks and I'm not about to sit through Neckbeard, er, Nerdrotic's 50 minute response video, I tried to watch to see what the "talking points" were. Yeah, couldn't even stomach that. If you can't create a coherent thought, or require an hour to do so, it ain't a coherent thought.

The "artificial intelligences rebelled against their creators and are now banned and persecuted" backstory is maybe a too old and worn-out sci-fi standard trope to use it here. Are Dahj and her sister Replicants or are they Cylons?
This.

It's 2020. How about some really new, original and fresh sci fi ideas?

What? Nothing?

OK, whatever. Just another nostalgia trip. I must admit, it was one good trip, but nothing special or breathtaking.

If we're doing a 10-scale, I want to watch it one more time before I pin down a number. But if I want to watch it a third time this quick, it's really deciding between a 9 and a 10. I'm leaning towards 9.

As early as the Terra Prime arc of ENT Mars was in the earliest stages of terraforming and when the NX-01 officers went down to the surface of the planet to locate and defeat Paxton there was mention that oxygen levels had increased to the point where brief moments without a helmet were possible. The Synth attack on Mars happens at least 230 years later so we can probably assume that Martian terraforming really started to take off after the birth of the Federation. Oxygen levels in the atmosphere could be significantly higher and thus support raging fires on the surface of the planet.

Really liked the episode. Good acting. Loved the flute in the theme. Liked Pill's acting & the lass playing Dahj.

Some info dropping had to happen, it was done as well as could be hoped for. Bit of Treknobabble with Data's memories, but I was OK with it.

FWIW, Data's memories could have been downloaded at other times, or extracted from B4 before they were mostly lost.

I think introducing characters slowly is the best way to go. 6-7 in one episode is too much. We got two new characters (Dahj & the Doc) plus 15 years of catching up with JLP, the Fed, Nemesis, and ST09. A pretty heavy lift for 50 min. Well done.

Worth noting that most initial episodes are doubles. Farpoint, Emissary, Caretaker, Broken Bow, and Vulcan Hello/Binary Stars are ALL doubles (or double length).

We haven't had a 'single' debut episode since "Man Trap." The Cage never aired and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" aired 3rd, I think. While those were the pilots, they were not the debut episode.

Point being, more time to introduce new characters in a double episode.

Did anyone else hear the reference to Galactic treaty?

Its entirely possible that in Picards time the Federation includes members in the Gamma and Delta quadrant and that the borg or the founders are no longer a force.

I noticed this too upon multiple rewatches. Did the Dominion sign this treaty? Does it still exist? And what about all those Delta quadrant races?

Also, if a "galactic treaty" was signed does that imply we now have galaxy spanning communications? Or can we actually travel quickly to other quadrants to negotiate such treaties?

We need to know if slipstream is a thing in Picard. That way I could see them having a galactic treaty.
I’m surprised the Borg are allowing the Romulans to hang out in one of their cubes. I thought they always came back to reclaim their materials.

I don't think it's meant to be taken as literally a "galactic" document signed by all sentient and major powers. It's just shorthand for "treaty that effects all of known and explored space in this part of the galaxy."
True. Pike did describe them as a Galactic Federation in Discovery. Something I thought was a massive exaggeration.
