most disappointing Trek movie?

If disappointment is defined as "high expectations versus actual results" I'd have to say, given some additional thought, that FC was the film that disappointed me the most.

Good movie, probably the best TNG outing....but it was a much smaller-scale and flawed movie than what I expected going in.

Like I said, that doesn't make it a bad film. But, by definition, it probably disappointed me the most.

But I changed my answer to GEN. I was actively angry when I walked out of that movie, so much so that I got into an argument with one of my friends during the drive home. SO many bad choices, and SUCH a disappointing death for Captain Kirk. You don't get a second shot at that.

So that one.

As I recall nearly all of the fandom knew/expected that Nemesis would be bad before it was released, both those who avoided watching it and and even most who were willing to watch it. Though yeah, you could still be disappointed by it even coming in with low expectations.

A nitpick, but BEY should be replaced with STB analogous to STID and ST (2009), since the crew is trekking beyond having done so into darkness and nowhere in particular before that. The lack of a colon means ST is the film title or a part of it, not just the franchise name.

So many to choose from, and then there is the idea of what constitutes being "disappointing." For me, I had been a fan since the early 70s, and I had been watching TOS since the original run. The expectations for TMP were huge, and it failed on almost every level to measure up to TOS, so I would have to call TMP the most disappointing.

just thought of this due to the Generations 25 thread where I called it the most disappointing Trek film of all time in terms of what you probably imagined it could be.. but thinking about it - is it? really?..maybe not. lets look at the others (poll left out the obvious nots)

TMP - a biggie. as was obviously WAY disappointing to fans at the time expecting it to be more like TOS.
TWOK - a laughable notion it could have disappointed anyone. its was total opposite
TSFS - not really. (no need to include in the poll)
TVH - nope.
TFF - Hugely disappointing for fans and also moviegoers seduced by the near SW quality of the Genesis trilogy
TUC - no way.
GEN - total disappointment to those going in expecting something Yesterdays Enterprisey (like some trailers suggested)
FC - absolutely no f'in way
INS - a colossal disappointment after FC
NEM - all the signs/trailers looked a return to FC territory. so yes.
ST09 - no - unless you were expecting shatner to pop up
STID - no imo but obviously some hate it (imo not doing something to referenced Montalban was disappointing)
BEY - imo a huge disappointment after the notion of a shatner led 50th anniversary movie involving timetravel/realities

The Search For Spock.

To me, it was a very disappointing successor to TWOK and it felt like it was directed by a first time director.

Into Darkness, for sure. I could say it was because Kirk was an ass (he was); I could say I didn't care for the whitewashing of Khan (I didn't. Cumberbatch is an awesome actor, but that doesn't make him the best choice for this role); I could list a number of plot holes that really pulled me out of the movie. But my main problem with it was just this simple: when you've gone to the trouble of setting up a whole shiny new universe to tell shiny new stories in, why the hell are you retelling probably the best-known and most iconic story of the Prime Timeline? And largely without the resonances that made the first version so memorable!

Both deaths were final, and so disrespectful to the legacy of James Kirk; Shatner should've refused to do the movie. How did he think his character could ever be resurrected after that sh*tty treatment???

I'm going with TFF. I was just a nubie fan when TVH came out and was so excited to see that. By the end of TVH I couldn't wait for the next film to see what would happen to the new Enterprise-A.

I was also excited when I saw the film poster and I saw Jerry Goldsmith was returning to do the score. I couldn't wait to hear TMP picture theme on the big screen (until this past year I hadn't seen TMP on the big screen so it was a first for me). At least in that regard TFF didn't disappoint. It did have a great score, and I will say Laurence Luckinbill did a great job as well.

Otherwise TFF really didn't live up to it for me. And the special effects compared to the first 4 films was bad. Really bad. I couldn't believe how poorly it was done. I don't hate it. I have it on DVD and watch it when I'm doing a rewatch of the films. There are good things about it. But yeah, when it came out I was disappointed.

Insurrection would be a close second. In fact that would be the most disappointing, however, I have it a notch above TFF. Mainly because it at least looks like a proper Trek movie. It was competently made. And I love the cinematography in Insurrection. The on planet shots were nicely done.

But the movie was released in the early 7th season of DS9 so silly me thought there might be more than a brief mention about the Dominion War going on. I realize they wanted to make a movie accessible to the general public so they didn't want to get too much in the DS9 weeds. But I still would have loved to see an epic Dominion War movie. One that was it's own self contained story that could be told on its own. But even barring that something a bit more would have been nice. It probably would have been an ok episode of the TV series. But as a movie. Yeah, it was disappointing. Like TFF I find things to like in it and watch it along with the other films when doing a rewatch.

Generations no contest. In addition to the actual "genarations" of Star Fleet Meeting being stupid lack luster, and brief the movie is just really boring and confounded. The best part of the movie is pretty darn good CGI effects for the time when the enterprise crashes down.

The crash wasn't CGI. It was actually done with practical model effects. I agree it was well done, though.

I believe the actual saucer was a prop but some of the destruction around it apaered like a visual effect

Definitely Nemesis. I left the cinema feeling the same way that I felt when I realised i was too old to be playing with my action figures, a real sense of sadness and loss but also the feeling that i had some how outgrown trek. Thank goodness Discovery came along to change all that.
