Why are sci fi fans more mature?

Judging by various threads of this nature in recent weeks, I'm getting hints of possible latent resentment toward the "popular kids."
But seriously, we spend countless pages arguing passionately and eloquently about stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with anything, such as whether the Federation has money and if Starfleet is a military (the answers are yes to both, by the way). How is this a mark of maturity?

If you see many of the football forums on the internet you can see much unintelligible dribble and immaturity. I never see any of that on this forum.

What makes us more mature?
We're not.

You've not been looking hard enough. SF/fantasy fans are just as immature and idiotic as any other group of fanatics you care to name.

Some Trek fans like to dress up in costume and go to conventions. Just like sports fans.
Some sports fans collect memorabilia and put it on display in their home. Just like Trek fans.

Maybe mature isn't the right word, but there's definitely something going on different. In the history of Star Trek, has a convention ever broken out into a riot that spilled out into the city and caused damage to multiple shops and public property? I wonder how many sports riots* there have been since Trek premiered.

*It's so common it even has a name.

I assume it is because it includes the Rick and Morty fandom and that automatically raises the IQ level by at least 30 points, or so they yelled at me.

Well, there was the infamous riot at the Springfield Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con in 1998.

Sci fi fans more mature? No. You don't need the Guardian of Forever to time travel to this board's past. Look at the postings from 2007-8. Plenty of juvenile and sexualized stuff. This board of sci fi fans is now well moderated (starts with T'Bonz) so discussions and behavior are kept in check.

I used to be a huge NFL fan and a Star Trek/science fiction fan at the same time.
I watch soccer, and occasionally some of the Olympic sports like Track and Field and Equestrian competitions.

I attend about 3 NHL hockey games a year as I married into a hockey family.

I love IndyCar motorsports racing as much as I love Star Trek and Star Wars. By extension I am knowledgeable on other forms of auto racing including NASCAR.

I don't follow any other sports but I can carry on a little bit of conversation when it comes to other sports.

I worked with a couple of guys about 20 years ago that were really into science fiction and horror. Well read. Enjoyed Star Trek and Star Wars. One guy was a casual motor sports fan and the other guy loved his NFL and particularly the Seattle Seahawks.

Football fans wear the outfits and paint of their favorite team and then go to a big building and gripe about all the other teams. They even gripe about their own team while praising it, holy dichotomy Batman.

What's so different about sci-fi fans?
