If you see many of the football forums on the internet you can see much unintelligible dribble and immaturity. I never see any of that on this forum.

    What makes us more mature?

We're not more mature in any way.

If you don't see that in this - or any other sf forum, really - you're not paying attention.

I think the overall IQ may be a tad higher, but we're as dumb as any other cross section of the population.

Since I don't think scifi fans are more mature, I think nothing. You get the same mix as any other cross section of culture.

I have had intelligent conversations with my die hard football fan relatives, and heard scifi fans make the most childish of jokes. It's not a one size fits all category.

With all due respect.... This forum has proven quite often that scifi fans are not more mature.

I used to think this but it is disproved time and time again. Not just here, but across genre fandoms large and small.

Especially not when there are fanbase divisions such as in ST and SW creating conflicts with vocal minorities touting their own soapboxes and wearing their emotions on their sleeves.

Obviously you haven't been around here very long, I see that stuff on here constantly. Just go look at a few of the Star Wars threads and you'll see what I mean.

Would your football be referred to as soccer in North America? Just curious. I know a lot of NA football fans, none of whom I expect to discuss it anywhere besides Facebook.

For what it's worth, by and large this BBS is far more mature than any other forums I'd ever posted to. I don't spend a ton of time in TNZ though.

One of the very few other places I post on the internet is an area of a rock/heavy metal site. It's as much home to me as this place but substantially less judgmental / aggressive on occasion.

It's not that we're more mature. It just seems that way because sports fans are unwashed, unintelligent dummies who can't read, write, talk or walk upright.

I'm neither very fond of sports nor of sci-fi. I wonder where THAT puts me. ;)

In a black hole? Oh, I know the feeling. I'm not very much into sports myself. I feel they can put me asleep. And there's very little new sci-fi that interests me these days.

You proceed on a false premise...we're not. You just need to look at Twitter, BBSes like this one and social media in general to see Sci Go fans are just as bad as other fan groups of other generes (like crime procedureals, etc.)

We're not remotely more mature. Of late, I think I actually see more hatred, division and unintelligent drivel in sci-fi forums than I do sports.

You also can't tell when I'm being facetious. Sports fans have been dumping on us sci-fi fans going back generations. I see nothing wrong with giving back a little.

Oh, I figured as much, but that sword cuts both ways. Giving it back does nothing to help an already fragile situation.
