I don't understand the production design...

Well are you at least happy they didn't retcon the Galaxy class (exterior and maybe, from it seems, the interior) like they did the Connie? :nyah:

The Galaxy is my second favorite ship behind the original. But it proves the point that old designs hold up well in the current environment.

Is the modern equivalent of people comparing "2001" to an LSD trip without ever having taken LSD? :)
Indeed

Though they did make one tiny mistake on that Galaxy class, they mirrored the smaller shuttle bays, when one should be wider than the other. The Eaglemoss CG model also has that mistake coincidentally. I wonder if CBS used Eaglemoss's model lol.

That's how it starts. The ST: D 1701 was much closer the Pike's 1701 except for the nacelle pylons and Impulse Engines...and I'm sure all the guys at the SFX house will love recreating 30 year old TV and film models and NOT add any flourishes or influences from other sci fi media or Star Trek eras they like...oh, wait... ;)

We do seem to be talking past each other to some degree. I'm still puzzled as to why that question matters in terms of enjoying a theatrical production. Don't think it's a novel vs TV thing necessarily. One can enjoy a TV show or movie without wanting to live in it, and appreciate good production design without worrying about whether you personally would like to spend time there. See Dracula's castle, Tim Burton's Gotham City, or, nowadays, the candy-colored retro nostalgia of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel . . .

it doesn’t have to be either/or. But TNG offered something closer to real that resonated with a lot of people. Heck, that’s part that what made Trek popular initially when the comparable sci-fi was Lost in Space and Flash Gordon.

Frankly DS9 as a station only appealed to me as a place to live because of the main characters. Were it not for the leads on the series I don't think I'd find a refurbished Cardassian ore mining facility orbiting a former occupied territory that it left in ruins an ideal place to do anything more than visit.

I think it means eating, as in "nom nom nom".

There's a youtube video of cats saying that word as they eat... if there's another connotation behind "nomming", I honestly do not want to know... Do not tell me...

Show me instead  Eh, maybe tell me in advance so I can properly choose instead... :guffaw:

Hip young women are wearing high waisted jeans right now. A style that a few years ago was derided as "Mom jeans", probably by many of those same young women. Fashion

I'm just waiting for safety pins to come back in fashion again, like they were in 1981. Then after that came the Safety Dance. Then music became bad a couple years after that.

They’ll be back in fashion again in 2401. Along with togas, bell bottoms, and powdered wigs. Hold tight.

But TNG offered something closer to real
Speaking for myself? Disagree. Military vessels are utilitarian and industrial, not floating beige hotels.

It felt LESS real to me, which took me a little bit out of the show. And even if we agree that Starfleet is not solely a military, the ships serve that function, and for efficiency in battle would need to be designed for that function FIRST, exploration second. As for the living on the ship for 20 years? The crew quarters and family common areas would probably be a little more homey, but not the funcitonal areas of the ship such as the bridge, engine rooms, or labs.

This touches on why I think a huge percentage of fan designs are shit. They go for military designs similar to a nuclear submarine and the like. This is in no way realistic for a starship of 1) super advanced construction capabilities and 2) that will be in deep space for 5-20 years. TOS Enterprise wasn’t even as grimdark-accessible a design as those from so many armchair admiral artists.
