URGENT - Wikipedia Star Trek entries being deleted

MitchQ

Newbie
I went looking for a Wikipedia page I've used a lot - to answer a question from my son - "What are some other Sovereign-class ships called?" to find that the article has been deleted by a Wikipedia user called Spartaz. The article was called 'List of Star Trek Starfleet starship ships" or "List of Star Trek Starfleet ship classes" or something like that. Upon digging further, I see that in the last few days he's deleted at least 350 other Star Trek related Wikipedia pages. This really worries me. I've no idea how to contact Spartaz or appeal the deletions so I thought I'd post something here in the hope that we could do something.

The following link should be able to show you a list of the articles being deleted. It shows 50 at a time and it's many pages - it is completely obscene to be deleting all of this knowledge.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index....ffset=20191223090036&type=delete&user=Spartaz

Please help if you can, I'm completely powerless in matters such as these.

You still might be able to find that information on Memory Alpha.

I don't know much about Wikipedia's ins and outs. I too look things up on it occasionally but I've never added/edited/deleted anything from it. Maybe someone decided since there's a wiki devoted solely to Star Trek that in universe articles like ship names don't need an entry in Wikipedia as well.

Or it could be some idiot that hates Star Trek and is trying to ruin it for Trekkies (though I have to imagine there's some sort of safeguard against that sort of thing--wouldn't they have to have some sort of administrative priveleges to outright delete something?) I honestly don't know though.

But maybe that's all still on Memory Alpha. I don't believe changes made to Wikipedia affect Memory Alpha (or Beta) even though those are considered wiki sources also.

In the page you linked to, it appears that these pages went through the standard voting process for deletion, and the vote came in favour of deletion, so I'm not really sure that anything can be done at this point? But it seems that Spartaz is just carrying out the voting decision and deleting the articles; it is not like they are just going through and removing Star Trek-related articles on a whim.

Maybe the Star Trek-specific wikis would be a better option for you? They were created specifically for Star Trek-related information, so you wouldn't have to worry about information being deleted from them for being "non-encyclopedic". The Sovereign class article on Memory Alpha will list all the on-screen ships (although in this case, it is just the Enterprise-E), and the Sovereign class starships article on Memory Beta will list the ships both from on-screen and official non-canon resources.

Though I am a Star Trek fan (duh), I can live with Wikipedia rejecting too much detailed information about an entirely fictional universe, and concentrating on"actual" knowledge. Sure, the outlines of the Star Trek narrative should be there, and the main outlines of its history (both in- and out-of universe). But entire lists of any ships that ever appeared on screen? Nope. There are specific Star trek sites for that.

Yeah, I agree with the other guys on further reflection. Wikipedia itself is like what it's inspired by. An encyclopedia. As such it contains 'real world' stuff. The articles for the shows, movies, it's actual real world history and all that are appropriate, as well as general information about the making of and the general plotlines are appropriate. 'In universe' stuff like lists of ships are best handled by franchise specific wikis which Star Trek has (as do other franchises).

Now, if someone was going into Memory Alpha or Beta and deleting that stuff, that I would take issue with. That's why we have a Star Trek Wiki in the first place.

Hopefully Mitch finds the info he's looking for an one of the Memory....sites. If he's never visited them before he's probably in for a treat. I remember when I first found Memory Alpha I think I spent hours there in wonder and amazement....a whole website devoted just to Star Trek information :D:D:D.

I wonder if other people had a similar reaction when they first discovered it

As alluded to in earlier posts, I suspect one of the primary reasons most or all of these entries have been deleted is because there was no evidence of independent (i.e. non-ST-related) real-world significance. If you're looking for information on the in-universe minutia of any media series, whether it's Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc., Wikipedia really isn't the place for it unless that minutia is garnering attention from third-party publications.

Stuff like that doesn't belong on Wikipedia in the first place, since it aspires to be an actual encyclopedia. The detailed minutiae of pop culture franchises absolutely do not meet the standard of real-world "notability."

As mentioned, Memory Alpha is a comprehensive wiki-based fan-made Star Trek reference. There is also Memory Beta, a reference for licensed non-canon materials such as novels, games, comics, etc. The Enterprise-E is the only Sovereign-class ship whose existence has ever been confirmed in canonical materials, but Memory Beta has a whole page of Sovereign-class vessels from non-canon sources: https://memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Sovereign_class_starships
