Where the name Talos came from

Fixed that for you.

Well, I think the context made it clear that my discovery was evidence-challenged. Like all great breakthroughs in the history of Star Trek research, this epiphany will scale a wall of skepticism on its way to widespread acceptance. Or a contrary fact will turn up, and the idea for "Talos" will be sourced elsewhere.

"Jason and the Argonauts" is my all-time favorite Harryhausen movie, but it's a stretch to assume that's where Roddenberry got the name "Talos" from. As noted, it was a staple of Greek mythology that Roddenberry could have easily encountered at any point in his life prior to STAR TREK. Lord knows, I devoured books on mythology as a kid, and TOS is rife with mythological references and allusions: Who Mourns for Adonais, the Tantalus Field, the Venus drug, Medusans, etc.

Honestly, Roddenberry was more likely inspired by the real-life convention of naming planets, moons, and constellations after figures from mythology: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Phobos, Deimos, Orion, Casseiopia, etc.

Heck, "Vulcan" is a Roman god.

The counterpart to the Greek god Hephaestus, the god of the forge. And that reference got a lot of use in later Star Trek, especially Enterprise.
Vulcan's Forge had its first mention/appearance in TAS "Yesteryear."

Heck, maybe Roddenberry didn't come up with it at all. He had that fellow at the Rand corporation look it over for science. Maybe he said "Sirius isn't far enough out in space. I suggest a fictional name, like Talos or Fritos."

Whoever came up with it, I think there was a solid figurative connection of the planet and the myth: "Stay away from here!"
