Right. Basically, Anthopoulos--who is generally better with the media than this, so this surprises me--admitted to checking the temperature of players and what other teams were expecting to offer them. That's collusion, and MLB got hammered for it on three separate occasions in the '80s.

    OK, someone enlighten us "fuckers"...

Sounds to me like you can call, but can't say the term "free agents" in public?

How the hell are they supposed to conduct a trade or know what a free agent is offering without communicating with the team?

A trade and free agency are two different animals. When you call to discuss a trade with another team, you are talking about assets that are under contractual control. As far as free agents, that is why you have all those people working in your organization, to evaluate them and see how they would fit. Valuation has to be based on that and whatever information you deem "good" from public sources.

Teams talking behind the scenes to each other about who they are going after has the effect of holding down value in the market. Because some teams won't even make offers based on the information they are getting from other teams.

Bingo. This is what Peter Ueberroth openly encouraged teams to do back in the '80s, calling all of the owners "idiots" at his first meeting with them. If the Braves are calling other teams, as Anthopoulos admitted, to see what they might be looking to offer a particular free agent, then that's collusion with the intent to drive down market value, a textbook violation of the NLRA.

Of course, because Tony Clark sucks at his job, all he'll do is issue a press release saying the MLBPA is deeply disturbed or whatever, John McCain-style, then do nothing.

Really like the Padres new/old look. Never should've gotten rid of the brown, the blue was so generic.

Agreed. Teams should try to stay with their "historical" colors, even if they change the overall style of the unis.

Cashman says they will "pursue" the high priced starting pitching free agents...

I'm not putting any $$$ on that.

Rays Eric Neander named “Executive of the Year”. Hard to argue. The Rays won 96 games and damn near knocked off the Astros in the playoffs with the lowest payroll in the game.

Well, if they were cheating, it didn't help like you'd think it would. That season their road record was 53-28 and they were 48-33 at home. They probably installed camera systems in all the parks, which would make sense given their road record. Maybe their cameras in Minute Maid weren't as good.

Astros show themselves to be scum once again.

Time for some serious punishment, no draft picks next year, lifetime banishment for the managers GM, team president and the food guy.

Cheating is still cheating, even if you can't turn it into wins. Fiers makes a good point - this alleged cheating not only impacted the integrity of the game, but also negatively impacted the careers of young pitchers.

Didn't Luhnow work for St. Louis before going to Houston?
