When you have a transporter system that can disintegrate the subject by simply selecting "widest possible dispersion" (ala Nomad in The Changeling) then how is ANYTHING beyond destruction?

Minor correction: Redjac was "killed" by transporter at widest possible dispersion, not Nomad. Nomad was just normally beamed into space to self destruct. BOOM! But the point is still the same.

Nomad may have been "beyond destruction" by having its shields up. At the end, Nomad's start of self destruct sequence meant his shields were down for both gravlifts and transporter to work on it (both in themselves are not harmful to Nomad). I guess Kirk didn't want to take the chance that Nomad may have a fail safe, reset system built into it if he tried to destroy the malfunctioning Nomad before it finished its own self destruct program. This may have included transporter dispersion; if sensed, it may engage internal circuits to override the transporter sequence.

Or then the very idea of firing anything, be it transporter beams or phaser beams, at a machine loaded with the energies necessary for devastating entire star systems, would have been considered a poor one. Especially indoors...

Here was the opening for a victory that would not cost the lives of the heroes as well. And Kirk doesn't believe in suicidal victory, as we find out in "By Any Other Name".

Good point, I did get them mixed up.
Man, the transporter was party to a lot of deaths in S2!
