Slings & Arrows and Section 31: Rogue

Centaur2000

Lieutenant

I just finished Slings & Arrows book 2. Before continuing with the next volume I'd like to know when Rogue does take place in regard to this series? Are there any references between S&A and Rogue? Thanks for your help.

According to @ryan123450's website it's after the entire mini-series.

That's an error, then. According to the timeline at the end of S&A Book 6, Rogue takes place somewhere in between Books 4 & 5, with Books 1-4 in 2372 and Rogue and Books 5-6 in 2373. Which suggests a very large gap between Books 4 & 5, because Book 6 isn't long before First Contact (its epilogue leads directly into the film), and the stardate for First Contact would put it late in the year.

As far as I can tell from a quick skim of Books 5 & 6, there don't seem to be any Rogue references.

I haven't read Rogue, but according to Memory Beta it references the number of Enterprise crew members who died in First Contact. To me, that would suggest the novel takes place after the movie, and thus after the mini-series.

From memory, there is an epilogue set after FC, but the bulk of the story takes place before.

Oh, that makes sense. I assume that ryan placed it based on where the book ends and not where the bulk takes place.

If my site has that wrong it’s probably a result of not having updated the info after I finally got to read Slings and Arrows. I’ll look into that and fix it this weekend.

“Rogue” has a framing story set after Star Trek First Contact (Stardate 50893.5) where Picard visits Sean Hawk’s family. The Prologue’s Stardate is 50907.2. Whereas the main story takes place six months earlier (Stardate 50368.0 to 50454.1). With “Slings & Arrows” books 5&6 are before “Rapture from DS9 as the new uniforms are mentioned. (“Rapture” doesn’t have a Stardate, but the next DS9 episode, “The Darkness and The Light” has a Stardate Of 50416.2)

Another thing confusing “Star Trek First Contact”’s placement is that in “In Purgatory’s Shadow” (which is Stardateless, but it’s sequel, “By Inferno’s Light” has a Stardate Of 50564.2) has a passing reference (at 31:05 on the NTSC DVD) to “the recent Borg attack”.

Going by Stardate’s, FC takes place after “The Children Of Time” which has a Stardate Of 50814.2 (it’s the last Stardated episode of DS9’s Season 5).

You can never rely on stardates. Their whole purpose is to avoid conveying meaningful chronological information, so that there's flexibility in the timing of the stories. They're just numerical gibberish pretending to make sense.

Without stardates that would mean that FC occurs early on in DS9’s Season 5 rather than at the end of the Season. In which case, “Rogue”’s framing story takes place around New Year’s 2374.

No, it has to be between "Rapture," when the new uniforms debut, and "In Purgatory's Shadow," which references the Borg attack. So it's just before midseason.

Rogue takes place between Books 3 & 4 of Slings and Arrows.

The whole point of S&A was to chronicle the first year of the Enterprise-E, since the movie First Contact established that it had been in service for a year, but aside from Rogue, no tie-in novels took place during that year. (I don't really count Ship of the Line, as that was the launch.) Since Rogue was six months prior to FC, I envisioned it taking place halfway through. The only explicit reference is in Book 6, my own Enterprises of Great Pitch and Moment, specifically Chapter 9, which is from Hawk's perspective, wherein he references his relationship with Ranul Keru.

Did I put that in the chronology? Okay, that works, too. There's absolutely nothing in Book 4 that ties to Rogue in any case, so it can go before or after. It doesn't matter either way. The only part that matters is that Books 5 & 6 take place simultaneously, and right before FC, and after Rogue. :)

Finally got around to looking into this and yes, like Jinn said, it was my intention that the placement on my TNG Reading List marked the framing story, not the main bulk of the story. I added that to the notes.
