George Lucas Felt Betrayed By Direction Taken In Episode 7

Let’s clarify just a little bit...

I believe what has been said here is that aspects of TLJ are in the realm of what Lucas wanted. And it has been reported that he was brought in for TRoS. But ultimately with his outburst about “white slavers” following the release of TFA, there was no doubt that he was frustrated with the direction of that film.
 
I like how the worm turns: during the Prequel years, Lucas "raped" our childhoods, but, now, because some people because Star Wars has suddenly become terrible, all is forgiven and we should listen to Lucas's ideas about midiclorians.

I wish Star Wars fans would pick a lane regarding who we are supposed to hate. I feel like I'm in a car driven by a drunk.
 
I can kind of understand from his perspective, but he gave up creative control when he sold the franchise. If he was really that concerned with his stories being told, maybe he should have stayed in a more active role in the franchise.

Yeah, this is why it is becoming increasingly difficult to take fandom seriously. The level of wishy-washy opinion changing is getting to the point of absurdity. The PT was torn to pieces by fans. Lucas voluntarily sold it. Iger stated that there was no guarantee of Lucas' ideas being used and Abrams and Arndt when a different direction, while keeping some elements (hermit Luke being chief among them). Lucas stated that he chose to step away because he knew "he would be miserable."

Lucas can feel however he wants. But, that doesn't make Disney somehow more evil or whatever spin will be attached to this story.
 
We already know Lucas wasn't happy with TFA, what with his grumbling back when it was released. Then he quickly made some generic backhanded PR statement about how he was sure the fans would love it.

Those people will always prefer the PT because the lead wasn't a woman.

You seem to assume it's the same people, as if "Star Wars fans" are some kind of monolithic uni-mind. But evidence suggests, for example, that the people who hate the idea of some people having a genetic Force advantage will always hate that idea.

Until I see evidence otherwise, I’m going to assume it’s the usual suspects complaining. It’s reflexive for them at this point. They are never happy.

I think the PT is crap, but it's nevertheless original crap. I think the ST movies so far are corporate, soulless crap (TFA), and comically misguided crap (TLJ), though they both feature better performances and more dynamic blocking than the prequels. I sympathize with Lucas' frustration over the ST's refusal to do anything new (other than undercutting itself, to no obvious story benefit), but that doesn't mean that I now hold the PT up as some unfairly maligned masterwork.

In short: there's enough crap to go around here. ;)

I agree with him, TFA was a rehash of A New Hope, complete with a Death Star.. I Liked it, but could have been done better. And I liked TLJ alot.. Prequal was good, but Attack of the Clones is the Worst one of all..
I prefere Rebels and The Clone Wars.. those are excelent! Have Dave Filoni be in total charge dang it!!

This goes against what some posters have been claiming about Lucas being all in with Disney's direction. I do concede that it does seem like they used SOME of Lucas' plot points. I was originally under the impression that they used none.

I was under the impression they used most of his ideas, if we are talking about the 'core' storyline, i.e. the focus would be on the journey that the next generation - Luke and Leia's kids - would take. So that would be Ben Solo/Kylo Ren.

IIRC, Lucas suggested a girl hero and Disney wanted an ex-trooper (or vice versa) and they were the same character for a while until Disney split them into two: Rey and Finn?

Keep in mind, these are Bob Iger's words as quoted from his memoirs we are discussing in this article, not Lucas's: The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company.

"He knew that I was going to stand firm on the question of creative control, but it wasn’t an easy thing for him to accept.

"And so he reluctantly agreed to be available to consult with us at our request. I promised that we would be open to his ideas (this was not a hard promise to make; of course we would be open to George Lucas’ ideas), but like the outlines, we would be under no obligation."​

Its becoming like the trekkies. You have some that love TOS and nothing else. Or they loved TNG but hated DS9. Etc. Etc. The more you branch it off, the more likely you are to divide the fanbase.
