News New Star Wars movie being developed by... Kevin Feige?

In a surprising bit of news coming from The Hollywood Reporter today, it seems that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will be spreading his wings under the Disney umbrella just a little bit and will be developing a Star Wars movie with Kathleen Kennedy.

As long as Feige isn't leaving his position as president of Marvel Studios, and there's no indication that he will be, I consider this the best Star Wars news to come along in a long time.

Feige is a winner. He knows what he's doing, he knows how to tell a story that people want to see. And he cares about the subject material.

Fantastic news, of course, but it raises the question of exactly when all these various Star Wars movies are going to be released. Feige has Marvel rolling along like the most well-oiled machine in cinematic history, with TEN Phase 4 projects announced for 2020 and 2021, and some 2022 material starting to be revealed too. Meanwhile the next Star Wars movie won't hit theaters until December 2022, and that was assumed to be the first of a trilogy, released every 2 years. And then there was the other trilogy. Plus other movies like this one. (To be fair, half of that MCU stuff is on Disney+, which Star Wars will have it's fair share of too, but still, there will probably be 8 or even 9 MCU movies between TROS and that 2022 one.)

The logical assumption is that Disney hopes that TROS will be a big hit, put Star Wars back on the right track, and allow them to schedule more than one Star Wars movie every 24 months.

And you know, it wouldn't just be TROS that does that. It would be The Mandalorian too. Not only is that expected to help reinvigorate the brand, but it's moving in the complete opposite direction. It will give us new high-quality live-action Star Wars every single week! If we can positively accept new Star Wars every 7 days, that would put an end to the notion that there needs to be a 24-month wait between every Star Wars movie.

Even though I do think the MCU can be formulaic, it's record of success is without question. It's giving millions of fans what they want and they keep coming back for more, without the divisiveness that has seeped into Star Wars, or the growing disinterest infecting some other mega franchises (Godzilla-King Kong comes to mind).

I hope that Dave Filoni isn't forgotten in whatever shakeups Disney might be doing when it comes to Star Wars. I think a Feige-Filoni partnership can right the ship. Feige alone, I'm wondering if it might stretch even him too thin since he has all the Marvel films and new television shows to work on. I would hope a Feige-Filoni partnership would be a situation like Nolan, Snyder, and Man of Steel, though that the end result would be better than that film.

The complaints from the idiot contingent on the board should be fun.
*Begins exhaustive ten paragraph rant about the Axis of Evil represented by Kathleen Kennedy, JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson and how they have ruined the Star Wars franchise irreparably and by extension the world itself by turning Star Wars into a series of SJW pandering girls movies and that Kevin Feige is going to make matters even worse instead of better. After all, he insulted men and destroyed masculine pride with the debacle known as Captain Marvel. Also includes nonsensical ramblings against black people, homosexuals, and the Jews.*

Well, I think that just about covers it. ;)

On point.

I don't know why this is surprising. He is a proven success and SW films are still a popular project.

Good luck, Kevin. You'll need it.

Feige's stuff has been shown to be even more generic and formulaic than Abrams', so "hard pass" on this.

Until we get more concrete into on Rian Johnson's project, TRoS will be the end of SW for me.

This is awesome, pretty much everything Feige has done for Marvel has ranged from pretty good to holy shit amazing, so hopefully he can bring that to Star Wars.

Filoni has a pretty good handle on the TV side of things, so I think I'd rather just seem him focus there, and let other people do the movies.

This is unexpected and not bad news I guess.
My problem is when I'm watching these big blockbuster movies, they all start to feel very much the same. I think that's a part of the reason why I liked TLJ, it felt very different.
I'm sure he'll do good things for Star Wars, but maybe we could let someone else have a swing?
