Hi everyone, I'd like to know how many people here played Tie Fighter?
Also, what was your experience?

Was it really the best Star Wars video game?

Here is a game review

Same here, loved the game a lot. What did you like most about the game?
It's sorta hard to put into words, but I'll try.

First off, Tie Fighter has to be judged in comparison to X-Wing. The graphics engine of TF was superior to that of XW, with IIRC something like double the number of pixels on each axis (edit - according to the Wikipedia article looks like the resolution enhancement may not have occurred until the Collector's CD-ROM version, which I had; X-Wing also had a Collector's CD-ROM version as well). Also, the object graphics were rendered with superior techniques. Additionally, there was overall an iterative improvement in the tactical controls. One target memory slot was sacrificed, but there were better target acquisition controls. The greater variety in spacecraft capability also added an extra dimension.

Not to mention, playing the role of the bad guys added a layer of drama to the experience.

The sound FX were outstanding.

Both games benefited from the total lack of latency in the DOS OS. If your machine was fast enough, the experience was completely immersive.

And that—being completely immersive—is what the game was most successful at. The story was strong, the levels were challenging, especially if you attempted to get primary, secondary, and secret objectives. It was Star Wars treated both authentically and as if it were real. In the ways in which it topped XW, TF closed the deal and completed the demonstration of what could accomplished on personal computers with this type of game.

Ahh nicely put. "It was Star Wars treated both authentically and as if it were real."

I liked the realism the most, feeling like you're actually piloting something more sim like was effective especially late night in a dark room with a glowing monitor as your window into that world. I remember having a laminated keyboard control map on my desk when I played... I got pretty good but I never could remember everything.

I find a lot of the older games had some magical effect of drawing out your imagination unlike some games today. Was it the lack of perfect graphics? Not sure, but I love storylines too, that's really important.

thanks for sharing!

Yeah, it's one of the classic PC games of the 90s. Great dogfighting and a wide variety of missions. Also a more gentle learning curve than X-Wing, which I recall having some brutally unfair missions right from the first campaign.

[edit] i just realised I may be participating in a thread created solely to advertise some guy's youtube channel

well, not my channel.. I can delete the link.. hmm, but how?

I've never been able to get these working on a modern OS, even XvT. I never got to experience these the first time around as I wasn't into flight combat sims back then.

If I remember correctly, I tried XvT about 5-6 years ago on a Virtual Machine, it's actually ran fine.
I should see if I can get it running again.

You probably don't have the ability to edit posts yet. You could ask a moderator to do so for you.

I can't remember if I ever actually played this. I would like to, but I might not be able to get it running on my current computer as Owain Taggart says.

i used to play in 1998 the x-wing vs tie-fighter thing I looked it up and there was a video that brought back all my memories of the game woe...

Proud to be apart of the Secret Order of the Emperor. TIE Fighter was a great game, I revisit it often thanks to GoG. Much more enjoyable than X-Wing, and while I enjoy X-Wing, some of the missions are extremely difficult.

TIE Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance are some of my favorite games from back then.

Damn good game and also responsible for letting me know exactly how weak-ass Skol lager was. Me and my uni friends had divided a 24-pack of the stuff (500ml cans) between us (eight each) and I was still able to fly some of the trickier missions on this no problem. None of us felt drunker than we would have on Horlicks.

There's an urban legend that George Lucas put the kibosh on future sequels to the game because it made the Empire too cool.

And it did.

Awesome game.
