The Dark Crystal Prequel Series Coming To Netflix

Be interesting if there were 22...3 copies of, or variations of, the Seven Deadly Sins (for 21), and one Oddball/Loony.

 

Ah, okay, that makes sense. I haven't looked too closely at the time spirals but it's cool to know there's some deeper meaning there.

 

Something about the end of episode 8 doesn't add up.

Okay, so the Sanctuary Tree is attacked by the Darkened worm critters, the Nurloc. It says there's nothing it can do to save itself from them, so as it dies, it gives its power to Deet. Then, Deet immediately heals one of the Nurloc, removing the Darkening from it. If that's the power she got from the Tree, then why couldn't the Tree heal the Nurlocs before they killed it?

 

She transferred the darkening to her. I expect the sanctuary tree being infected would be more disastrous than her.

 

But she wasn't infected. She cured it.

 

Three episodes in now....This is very well made.

 

Are you sure? I took it that she transferred the darkening into herself.

 

The documentary is impressively in-depth, and it was great to see the behind-the-scenes process. My favorite part was when they showed the full assembly process of the Chamberlain with the two puppeteers inside.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Lore was frequently an on-set puppet, operated by blue-suited puppeteers who were digitally erased. Although it looked like it was a mix of doing that sometimes and otherwise using the puppet as reference for a CGI Lore that replaced it.

Hearing about the earlier proposals of doing a fully animated series or a mix of CGI Gelflings and puppet Skekses, I'm really glad they decided to go ahead and make it the same way as the original. If they'd done it any other way, I would've kept wishing they'd done it this way instead.

 

I've been hearing a lot of great things about this series, and I have it on my "My List", but I've never watched anything about it. Should I see the movie first or am I ok going with the series and then maybe the movie?

 

It's basically the same kind of situation as the Star Wars prequels, you'd miss the references and set ups for the movie, but you'd be able to follow the story of Age of Resistance fine.

 

I would recommend watching the movie first, though that's for the sake of the movie rather than the series. Even though the series is a prequel, it spoils (and builds a fair amount of its story around) a key piece of information that isn't fully revealed until the climax of the movie. Also, there are things in the series that have more resonance if you're familiar with the movie, both foreshadowings and in-jokes. A lot of it is about explaining why things are the way they are in the movie.

Plus there's the fact that the technical state of the art in the series is more advanced than in the movie, and so is the sophistication of the writing. So I'd say it's better to start with the movie and then see how the series expands on its achievements.

Plus, the movie's only 93 minutes, which is shorter than two episodes of the series (well, about the same as the two shortest episodes, but shorter than any other two). And it's right there on Netflix along with the series and the documentary. I don't see any reason to skip it.

 

Personally, I'd recommend trying the series first. It stands alone as much as it aims towards the film, and you'll get to discover things along the way that you otherwise already know and take for granted if you watch the film first. You've gone this far without the film, so you get to experience the new story pure if'n you wanna.

I think I am going to watch the movie first. It’s what the fans had to do, so watching the series first might be considered cheating.

 

The one thing this show does well was really showcase the character of Chamberlain better. In the movie I always thought he was genuine when he wanted to help Jen in his actions and I hated it when Jen betrayed him. Now I know that he wasn’t and I applaud Jen for his decision.

 

The Chamberlain was certainly the stand-out, but the show did an excellent job of giving the Skeksis as a whole much more depth of personality. In the movie they're (by design) little more than caricatures of vice and evil, both petty and profound. Here, you get much more of a sense of the interplay of the different character types, and that there's an underlying intelligence to them that hints at how they might have been in the very beginning, and how they were able to beguile their way into their position of power.

 

i just finished the series and saw the documentary and WOW, what a show.

Anyone who grew up with the 1982 Jim Henson fantasy classic who is either an 80s kid or a 90s kid (ones who saw it on video or on Disney Channel in the 90s) or even those who are 80s/90s kids hybrids like me (born 37 years ago and adored the movie for for 33 years since i was 4 when my parents bought me the movie on VHS at 4 then 25 years ago i rebought the movie on Disney's VHS when i was 12 in 94 then in 2000 i replaced the tape with DVD then in 2009 with blu-ray and last year i bought the ultraHD 4K BD which is my first UltraHD 4K BD purchase).

What do you get when you cross Game of Thrones, Heavy Metal (magazine and movie), Robert E Howard, Frank Herbert, George Martin, JRR Tolkein, Demolition Man (themes of so-called benevolent leaders where rebels can see greed and deception), Avatar (both airbender and Cameron), Fire and Ice (1983), Star Wars, Legend of Zelda and Fraggle Rock? you get this epic series.

I love the world building, different gelfling tribes, the origin of how Skektek got his eye removed and all that. Maybe in season 2 we'll get a flashback of how the Urseks came and split into the two different races. All in 10 60 minute episodes in a miniseries kind of way. Even some rousing action in episode 10.

And i hear there will be more mystics in season 2 and maybe in season 2 even Garthims and maybe a background flashback of the Urseks.

This is using practical effects, animatronics, people in suits, puppets, cgi, models and all balanced together and is a passion project made by people who have an actual love of the original and honoring Henson's legacy and respecting the material just like Blade Runner 2049 was to Blade Runner as that was an excellent sequel.

This and Blade Runner 2049 succeeded, like Blade Runner 2049 and this show are made by people who care/respect the source material and do new stories even passion for the project. This looks like it's doing Jim proud! and nice cast too even Mark Hamil as the scientist.

Good job Jim Henson Company! my favorite show of the year as it's my new favorite Netflix show followed by Stranger Things, Castlevania, Toys that made us, Bojack Horseman, Daredevil, Punisher,Love Death and Robots, Voltron Legendary Defender and more.

For Dark Crystal Age of Resistance season 2, For ideal voices for Mystics for season 2 should be Ron Perlman, Jim Cummings, Frank Welker, Rob Paulsen, Canadian voice actor John Stocker (whom you know from Care Bears as Beastly and X-men TAS as graydon creed and COPS the animated show as Longarm and more), Brad Douriff , Keith David and Kevin Conroy. For Skekung the other General skeksis who replaces Skekvak, i believe Charlie Adler with his Chance Furlough/Razor from Swat Kats/Ed Bighead from Rocko's voice would be perfect. The leader of the mystics should be voiced by Jim Cummings and he's be perfect to play the one who is the leader who later found Jen and raised him
