Get ready to re-enter the Matrix.

Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of “The Matrix,” with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement on Tuesday.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

I have no recollection of the end, but if flesh and blood Neo is dead, either side could have built a digital Neo loyal to their agenda.

If I was going to make a fourth Matrix movie, there's only on possidlble decision...

The first movie was great but the sequels had nothing to really top it with. Apart from a mishmash of franchises, what could they do?

I loved what the Wachowski sisters created with Cloud Atlas and Sense8 (albeit from a novel for the former and with JMS for the latter), but I'm not at all interested in revisiting The Matrix.

When the Matrix trilogy came out, it still made sense to differentiate between the "real world" and the digital world of the Internet. Since then, however, Facebook and social media, smart phones, and constant connectivity have blurred the lines between the two worlds that make the movies' binary real world/Matrix reality feel almost quaint. So, this movie, which will already have to revive two dead characters (though I guess one could say they left digital copies in the data streams of the virtual world) will either have to totally revamp the series' core concept, or... be an insular sequel to The Matrix Online?

Actually, maybe it'd make sense that the post-peace Matrix world, due to its communication with the real world and less restrictive/policed reality, would be more fluid and Cloud-based than the captive society the movies showed. Maybe minds in the Matrix will use their phones to say, order a meal, which will then magically appear in front of them the same way online deliveries work in our current world, only much faster and without a human moving a product in accordance with the laws of physics.

One things for sure: this movie'll definitely be an interesting departure from what came before, or it won't.

My first instinct is to reject it out of hand, but Keanu and Carrie-Ann are on board, and with Lana producing it means I will want to get more details.

There'd be no point to that. This isn't an Aliens 2 situation, where the only way to bring back Ripley, Hicks and Newt is to erase previous movies; Neo and Trinity both spent enough time plugged into the Matrix that they can plausibly be revived in their Matrix forms, and does anyone really care about their real-world forms?

Blatantly erasing movies from continuity (as opposed to starting over with a clean slate) would probably significantly devalue their future home media/streaming worth, which is likely why it's so rarely done, and unpopular entries are usually ignored at most. Unless there's really no in-between options, it's throwing away free revenue from already-produced product.

I don't want to be negative, but I really don't see how this could be anything other than Member Berries do The Matrix "Member Neo leaning back as the bullets whiz by in slow motion? I member." "Member Trinity freezing in mid crouch/kick? I member." "Member every time Agent Smith menacingly said 'Mr. Anderson'? I member."

Oh, who am I kidding. I'll be in the theatres first thing opening weekend, and if anything, this'll likely give me an excuse to dust off the trilogy and give it a re-watch.

Lana wouldn't have agreed to do this without having a creative direction she was fully confident in and proud of, but there is a part of me that wants the franchise - which is one the few successful superhero properties out there that wasn't based on a comic book - to remain a Trilogy.

This might be what happens as Trinity was pretty dead too.

Maybe a race to restore Neo or Trinity’s physical body through digital code

Years go by. Suddenly a message in the matrix appears. It’s Neo

“I know you’re still out there....”

Would it be too old fashioned if digital Neo still used a pay phone?

BTW the machines absolutely didn't need farms of humans for power or whatever. They just didn't need that and that's my opinion..

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a soft reboot. I can't imagine Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss putting themselves through that grueling training and doing heavy action scenes for an entire film. Whatever they do would have to be a major step up.

It's been years since I have watched the trilogy.
