Laserdisc Query

The oxidation effect, or the gold look is not necessarily the end of the disc though surely? What about the clouding too?

I'm pretty sure if you can see it, it's a chemical reaction in progress that will slowly, inexorably destroy the disk's readability.

What are the CED discs? There's no real info on them on that page and there's only a handful of episodes!!! No Doomsday Machine, Arena or Day of The Dove is not my idea of fun! But thanks for the input, Tom! :techman:

There's an antique mall near me that occasionally has a couple movies on CED. Over time there will be physical wear from the stylus, like with phonograph records.

There’s also CED’s cousin VHD, but I think only the first 3 movies came on those.

I just found this promotional gem from the glory days of CED. Lots of movies available under $20! The hostess puts the Rodney Dangerfield movie Easy Money in the player and says "Some of these scenes are so funny, you're gonna laugh your sides off!" And then it shows the "KHAAAN!" scene from TWOK. Cut to host and hostess clinging to each other in fright. "Wow, talk about sheer terror!"

With CED, I think the only 2 Stereo Trek releases were TWOK & TSFS, while the others, including the 2-disc TMP were all issued in the white cases indicating MONO audio. These might be the only place to find the original mono audio that someone on these forums claims is missing from the VHS/BETAMAX/LASERDISC/BLU-RAY/HD-DVD.

I shall go through all those titles later but it's weird really when you think the system is out-moded and defunct and has been for many years! I wonder if they'll be saying that about DVD and Blu-Ray one day?

Home video was new and my guess is no one knew if television on home video would be viable. This format was done by around 1984 and Paramount didn't even start releasing the series on home video in its entirety until after CED was discontinued.

It's funny...City and Battlefield do thematically go together, with the destruction of cities and war, and City's alternate future goes hand-in-hand with Battlefield's planet of destruction.

But why so few episodes available?
JB
According to Memory Alpha, the first Beta/VHS/CED releases were released to promote the home video debut of “Star Trek The Motion Picture” in October 1980, and Paramount was expecting more people to rent the tapes/discs back then, as, apparently the list price for one Trek Beta/VHS was $79.99 in 1980 (about $250 in 2019 USD).
