Didn't Picard say something about being the first Picard in Starfleet? Going there against the wishes of his father?
And? This is Star Trek, no prior statement from characters matter in the slightest. Section 31 hid in the shadows for three centuries... until they didn’t. Cloaking tech was theoretical... until it wasn’t.
That's why making your own family tree is a risky business, you could discover that you don't have as many ancestors as you thought.
No argument there, though I think it's fair to say that when it came to continuity, TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT had the advantage of having mostly the same people working on all four series.
As I have more friends interested in Star Trek again, thanks to Picard, I'm going to show them "Calypso" whenever I get a chance to get them into Discovery. Not only because I think it's the best thing Disco-related ever put out -- Period. -- but also because it'll whet their appetite for seeing the third season, set in The Future. And it's an excuse to get them hooked with a knock-out that lasts for less than 20 minutes.
man agreed. i'd go so far as to say it's the best thing the franchise has put out since star trek 2009.
I'd go so far as to say that Calypso is possibly one of Star Trek's finest offerings. A real masterclass in doing a lot with a little, from characterization to world-building to visual/aural storytelling. Yep, I'm a big fan.
Frakes is directing Episode 8 of Season 3 https://twitter.com/StarTrek_DST/status/1167490957648027649
i really like new blood behind the scenes, but frakes is probably the best director they have. every other director seems like they want to get experimental and flashy with their camera work and lighting, they end up distracting from the scattershot writing and making these shows super unclear. at least to me.
