Unpopular Trek opinions game

That's the rub, isn't it? For a lot of folks, the visuals matter just as much as characterization and events. Why are folks who think the visuals are important somehow wrong? It was the way Star Trek was presented to them.
Who is dismissing it out of hand and calling it wrong? I disagree on the importance of the visuals, but I'll not fault anyone for treating a show in a different continuity. I just try to keep that in mind when discussing it :techman:

Here's how the visuals matter: Whichever one you prefer.

You are free to visualize the events in DSC as happening with a TOS aesthetic, or (as I do) every TOS episode looking like DSC. It doesn't change the events, only how they look. There is no right answer.

Or one can simply treat them as different realities within the Trek multiverse.

Unpopular Opinion: If we get a Pike Series and it's followed by a Kirk Series, I'll have to re-evaluate my stances (as far as continuity and timelines, not what I'd think about the quality of the series, which I'm sure would turn out great). Imagining TOS interwoven with a hypothetical Star Trek: Kirk is a bridge too far for me, continuity-wise.

"The Cage" is just one episode. It's easy to pretend there's an imaginary version of "The Cage" that looks like it was done in Disco Style. Picturing a continuing storyline -- with character arcs and a shifting status quo -- that takes place during the same time as TOS Proper that constantly weaves in and out between episodes over the course of the entire series is something else.

Sorry for the double-post, but I just came up with something inspired.

Opinion
Old Trek = Coca-Cola (with sugar cane)
NuTrek = New Coke
CBS Trek = Coca-Cola Classic (with fructose corn syrup)

I've tried Mexican Coke (which still uses sugar cane), and that's basically what Coke tasted like until 1985 from what I understand. And I do notice a difference. Corn Syrup is like the Visual Reboot.

"The Cage" is like Coca-Cola with cocaine, from 1886. The original original version.

The Coca Cola I had in Panama was delicious. They would drop off cases of glass bottles, and once they were all drank, they'd come pick up the bottles.

The sprite was really good too

I accept that Discovery takes place in our regular, original Trek universe. And of course, they're going to update the visuals because of our special effects technology, but a lot of that stuff makes it look like a Kelvin interpretation.

Unpopular Question; Is Pike really that interesting to warrant a show after him? Just a question, although it may be unpopular.

Or if someone preferred to keep it simple, just acknowledge that aesthetics evolve over time, and not necessarily uniformly. It's not like that's unrealistic.

It is simpler for me to treat them as two distinct timelines/versions of the 23rd century.

And it isn't some kind of slam of Discovery. I personally love alternate history/alternate timelines/parallel universes, sparked by "Mirror, Mirror" all those years ago. I actually find the show much more entertaining as its own thing than as a prequel awkwardly wedged into the TOS universe.

We all have our personal preferences on how it all fits together. Though I pointed out a looong time ago things would get awkward if they went deeper and deeper into the 23rd century.

I don't remember if this was before or after I came back as a regular to the board. But I agree. In my defense, I didn't actually think a Kirk Series would ever be a possibility because I figured they wouldn't do anything with Kirk's Crew on TV as long as there were movies. But now, with the Kelvin Films done and Paramount re-merging with CBS...

... It'll be interesting to see how they tackle this when the time comes.

Kirk is wiser than other captains, admirals, planetary leaders, robots, androids, computers that run civilizations, gods, ...and even Vulcans.

If they do "Pike" then "Kirk" and his Enterprise is inevitable, in my opinion

I kinda love this comparison. And, yes, Mexican Coke is the best.

So long as Tina Turner isn't singing
You don't think we will need another hero to show us the way home?

Given how inaccurate Spock is about the deaths in the first and second world wars, the numbers for the third are probably no better.
Solution - Star Trek is dealing with Earth 2 not our Earth

Riker said 600 million, to reach that level of fatalities nukes would pretty much have to have be used (maybe combined with other weapons of mass destruction). In FC, Data mentioned radiation in the atmosphere.
10% of the then world population makes more sense, if i was rebootin the franchise I would make that number even higher, say 2 billion.
The problem with justice is that you don't believe that it's a real planet for one second!!! They all look the same: tall, blond young and athletic. What do they do to people over thirty? Euthanize them?
As opposed to all those other Star Trek episodes where all the aliens looked like they came from small town USA?

I wouldn't. Over tripling the death toll means that Earth isn't going to recover for centuries, instead of the half century in the Trek timeline. The devastation would of had to of been much more wide spread, instead of in (my thoughts) a few countries.
