Unpopular Trek opinions game

“Feeling” something is so, doesn’t make it so.

I'm certain the world will survive my big rebellion in life of treating a Star Trek show differently than CBS says I should.

IIRC, the ep "Too Short A Season" was supposed to feature Kirk coming back to face the results of what he did in "A Private Little War". Shatner didn't want to return, so the setting was moved and Kirk was replaced with Jameson.

I think that was debunked somewhere along the way.

....

But DSC and TOS are in the same universe. Whatever people feel about that, it's a fact.

As much as something can be "factual" about a pretend universe, anyway...

Except that Gabrielle Burham says she's changed the timeline hundreds of times. So that means that contrary to TOS who's only in one timeline, Disco is present in hundreds of them

I tend to agree that the franchise has played in the timeline so often that it can't be the same as whatever the original was. TOS probably isn't even the original timeline.

We are not six months out from that episode (that would be the end of September). The multiple warnings pinned above are very clear.

Boy Is it easy to forget about the spoiler thing... I must have put the spoiler stamp like several dozens of times already but to err is human.

While I understand, it wouldn’t be fair if you didn’t get the same formal warning others did for the same infraction.

Especially since you have been formally warned for the same thing in this very thread!

Yeah... That might be the exception that proves the rule.

Given that Kirk's prerecorded speech in "The Tholian Web" is little more than an extremely padded rendition of "Hey you guys, you're locked in philosophical bickering, but I'm toast and the ship is in danger due to the critical tactical situation right now so as I go on and on for several melodramatic minutes kissing up Spock for you instead of you saving the big hunk of metal and all its critters within", I really do think Evil Spock from the Mirror Universe popped over to not only take place of real Spock but also to edit the original saved tape - like how Finney edited the video in "Court Martial" - as interphase opens up a multiverse of opportunity.

Nor can I deny how unpopular, grossly convoluted, that opinion is. But it does make a fascinating sort of sense.

Or a warped one.

Wouldn't that mean two different universes?

Beats me. The producers say it's set in the same universe. To me it looks like some alternate universe. The added characters, the events, the style and look... it looks like some Kelvin version, but according to the creators, it's set in the same universe as the prime universe.

I think they're just talking about the plot continuity, not the art direction. Pike is still captain of the Enterprise before Kirk, his first officer is the same Number One we saw in "The Cage," he was captured by Talosians and fell for Vina, the Klingons and the Federation don't get along, the Mirror Universe is bad news, etc. It's the same universe as far as what happens, as opposed to what it looks like.

That's the rub, isn't it? For a lot of folks, the visuals matter just as much as characterization and events. Why are folks who think the visuals are important somehow wrong? It was the way Star Trek was presented to them.

All opinions are equally wrong

I'd never say that visuals don't matter -- I'm a Videographer! It's my job to care about visuals. -- but since DSC is intended to be a "visual reboot", I take it on those terms. If it wasn't intended to be a "visual reboot", I wouldn't.

"If it's a visual reboot, then it's not Prime!" I've already said before my view is: the current production is always Prime (unless depicted in-story to be an alternate reality). In the same sense that the current time we're living in is always Modern. After it's no longer current, I think it should be called something else if necessary. I don't know how unpopular this opinion is, but it's my opinion nonetheless.

But it's always been like this. Worf's son changed appearance three times, Saavik too. From the very beginning since TOS visuals have been changing in Star Trek.

You're talking about actors that had one or two appearances vs. a look that had been consistent for forty-plus years. From "The Cage" in 1964 to "In a Mirror, Darkly" in 2005. It is really an apples and oranges comparison.

But it is a YMMV situation. I just don't like my mileage being dismissed out of hand.
