Anno and Higuchi also did Shin Godzilla, and they're apparently rendering the Shin in katakana the same way Shin Godzilla did (Shin Godzilla was シン・ゴジラ and Shin Ultraman is シン・ウルトラマン), being ambiguous about whether the "Shin" means "New," "True," or "God." So it seems they're deliberately evoking a parallel to that movie. Well, if we're not getting a Shin Godzilla sequel, maybe this will be a suitable substitute.

Have they ever stopped remaking Ultraman? :)

Seriously though, a well-helmed movie doesn't sound like a bad thing.

I wonder how they’ll make him into a horrific creature

Most of the properties I’ve seen with “Shin” attached are usually dark and violent

Shin Kamen rider
Shin Godzilla

And now Shin Ultraman

They've stopped remaking Ultraman about as much and they've stopped remaking MS Gundam (or the U.S. redoing Star Trek in some form or other every few years. ;))

The title of Shin Kamen Rider used the kanji 真, meaning "true." It was also the main character's given name (making him one of several Riders whose Rider names are just their given names, like Kamen Riders Nadeshiko, Poppy, Geiz, and Woz). The two Anno/Higuchi projects both use the katakana シン that can mean "new" or possibly "god" as well. So it's not exactly meant to be the same word in all three cases.

Ironic how Ultraman debuted 6 days later than another tokusatsu series, Ambassador Magma (arguably the first and retitled as Space Giants in the US), but it wound up being the long lived franchise with over 30 different series and movies (each) and numerous specials and merchandising out the wahzoo. Not counting the manga from which it was adapted (created by Osamu Tezuka, who pretty much developed manga and anime as we know it today), what did Ambassador Magma get as a follow-up? A single OVA (original video anime).

I'm not very familiar with Ultraman, but I learned recently that it's the reason tokusatsu franchises like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai start over with fresh casts and storylines every season. Apparently the first Ultraman season ended with the character losing his powers (and his memory?), and rather than try to reverse that the following season, they just decided to start over with a new story and character, and thereby set a precedent.

I’ve wanted to tackle Ultraman but I’m already busy with kamen rider and super sentai

I’ve heard some seasons are short but it seems less coordinated. I wouldn’t know where to start.

I’m might just cherry pick series like Ultraman Tiga

Well, kind of.

The first series was "Ultra Q", which had no superhero at all, but played more like the Kaiju version of The Twilight Zone (although there were main characters throughout the show, the male lead being played by Kenji Sahara of Godzilla fame), and later that same year they debuted "Ultraman", which still had the "Ultra Q" title card at the beginning of every episode, and it's always been meant to be set in the same universe, as there are a few direct sequels to "Ultra Q" episodes.

The next show, though, "UltraSeven", was really meant to be its own thing, which was more about alien invasions than any of the previous shows. UltraSeven also didn't bond with a human, but always was an alien that just took the shape of a human. Actually, the only reason the show had "Ultra" in the title was because the TV station wanted it to, as they had aired another show, "Captain Ultra" (a space opera loosely based on the Captain Future novels) by Toei Studios, in the timeslot previously held by "Ultra Q" and "Ultraman", with "UltraSeven" being planned for the timeslot. And only retroactively was UltraSeven set in the same universe as the other Ultra-shows.

But, in general, your point is true. But to be fair, Japanese tokusatsu hadn't been particularly character-fixed, anyway. The Godzilla movies, the Gamera movies, the DaiMajin movies, they all used new human characters with every new installment.

One relatively short series I'd recommend is "Ultraman Max", which is the 2005 show mostly in spirit of the Showa shows, but set in its own universe with no prior knowledge necessary. There also are episodes by big name Japanese directors like Shusuke Kaneko and Takashi Miike, lots of humor and a good mix of classic suitmation / miniatures and modern CGI. And it were only 40 episodes.

A few months ago I tried to get into Ultraman Red and blue

SciFi Japan| SHIN ULTRAMAN Update: Filmmakers Reveal Inspiration For Hero's Design

The designed reminded me of this "trailer" from 2016, which turned out to have been leaked instead of released officially. Might have been a concept trailer to test the visual effects?

What does Shin mean in Japanese? I was just wondering because first we got Shin Godzilla and now we're getting Shin Ultraman.

Holy crap, this movie is from 2015!? It looks like a HD version of a 90's Power Rangers movie! Seriously, it's pretty hokey looking.
