This is a bit... ambitious. With the falling popularity of the show, will people shell out money to see a spinoff?

I was really surprised by that this is actually going to be in theaters. I guess they must figure that Rick (and possibly Michonne?) are a big enough draw to get people to go see it.

Danai Gurira does have a film career taking off, what with her involvement with Black Panther and the MCU, plus her role in the upcoming Godzilla vs King Kong.

Yeah, I dunno...I see this not working out for them.

All depends on the budget... if it's the same budget as the show, even a 10 million gross will be worth it...

Good point, if they keep it cheap then curiosity alone might be enough.

Sure--it seems perfectly opportunistic to send TWD to capitalize on Gurira's growing career, but in the bigger scheme of things, this seems more about the showrunners' big screen ambitions than a legitimate reason to distribute the movie in theatres to please fans.

It's definitely surprising that they plan a theatrical release, especially with the current blockbuster mentality in the movie biz, with screens being reserved years in advance before they're even written or given a title. And there's no Drive-Ins anymore, which would be the perfect venue for Walking Dead. Are there such a thing as low-budget B-movies in theaters anymore? It seems like those have migrated to the world of cable and direct-to-DVD (or streaming).

Lower budget films still populate the multiplexes, but yeah, cable/streaming has been the central venue for the less-than-A-list films for well over a decade. That said, the WD showrunners do not see their productions as low budget or B-movies, since they are still one of the most profitable/popular franchises of any kind of the past 20 years.

The articles that always talk about declining ratings are all overblown. It's still the most watched scripted show on cable. It was just a cultural phenomenon at its height.

I'm still expecting a one or two night only release. Surely they don't expect this to be a blockbuster.

I doubt that. While they may not be expecting a blockbuster on the scale of an MCU movie, they're still going to expect it to rake in some money, and giving it such a deliberately limited run would only hurt them financially.

I'm curious just big they are going to go, if they were smart they would keep it fairly small scale, but I fear that they might try and go to big.

Why do you fear that? It won't affect the show, and we'll get an epic movie. A corporation might lose some money, oh well.

I think the boat for a Walking Dead theatrical release has sailed.

True...but it took Andre Lincoln leaving the show apparently to give them this opportunity.

we will see if this is InHumans level flop.... or if they can keep the budget relatively low (like giving Lincoln a percentage vs. straight salary), it could be worth it for the studio... but we will have to see something very different/creative to get people to want to see it. If they can get flashbacks to the beginning of the outbreak, that COULD make it exciting enough for people to see... but also wondering will they have a good enough storyline to make SEVERAL movies as promised and/or have a plan to let this be the only one, if needed.

And i assume that Judith will stay on the show, and they need to contrive somethign for a family reunion.

Would the sequel have Michonne, or this one??

Having Michonne in addtion to Rick would help up the ante for audience desire.

At some point, Michonne has to be a part of it. From rumors, the Rick movies will cover part of his time away, but they will eventually even the timeline with that of the current WD series. With Michonne leaving (and I have to guess this is after Ezekiel goes bye-bye in her life), the last Rick movie--Hell, the entire reason for his story--would fall apart if he's never reunited with his family.

It won't be good if it has a high budget?
