I suppose if they want to explain it, they can say that he saved it from a planet or colony world where it had been mistreated. That'd dovetail with Stewart's own efforts to publicize pitbull rescue and adoption.

I did and it looks a little big to be a pit bull doesn’t it? That’s why my first thought was Bull Dog.

As for Picard having a dog, isn’t this 20 years after Nemesis? Maybe Picard had a change in artificial heart. Maybe it’s a service dog.
