Happy Canada Day, all! :D

I bought a Fireworks doughnut at Tim Hortons (haven't tried it yet).

Otherwise I'm not doing anything special. July 1 is the first day of the latest NaNoWriMo contest, so I'll be working on a novel.

Any of you Torontonians know why it's taking so long to finish the reconstruction of Union Station? When do they currently think it'll be done?

I just looked up the Fireworks donut and now I want one, and a breakfast sandwich, and a chilli bowl. I miss Timmies.

Do they still have those red velvet cookies with the cream cheese bits? I was addicted to them!

I'll link some articles on the first question, on the second at this point in time I think it's a case of "anyone's guess"

But's an absolute nightmare to try and get through. Back in 2016 when my mum was visting we had to navigate from the level through to the up level for the GoTrain. Guess you'd gradually learn the route if you did it everyday if not...

When the wife and I were there in January it wasn't much better but fortunately we only had to find our way from street level to the GoTrain.

I visit Toronto every year but I have never taken GO Transit, only the TTC. Although Union's new GO concourse seems very nice.

That said, the station doesn't seem that hard to navigate (it helps that I am a complete and total GEEK about mass transit so I actively enjoy the challenge), there's just a lot of construction still getting in the way, especially when going from the Great Hall into the subway.

I hadn’t heard of these until now. I guess I really haven’t been to Timmies much at all lately. I’d be interested to hear what you think of them.

Good luck with your writing!
Thanks! :)

I just tried it and... meh. It tasted good (quite a sugar rush given that I really shouldn't be eating anything like this at all), but nothing more special than any other Tim Hortons doughnut or Timbit.

I don't know what kinds of cookies they have. I only saw oatmeal at the mall kiosk where I go. The standalone restaurants probably have them if they're still available. The mall kiosk may have others, but since I went there to get a few Timbits (the doughnut was an impulse purchase), I wasn't really looking at the cookies.

Consequently, I had to take a trip to Ottawa yesterday, and not for Canada Day, although I did end up watching the festivities on TV and heard the fireworks booming outside the hotel room afterwards :D One peculiar thing is that it looked far darker outside on the TV than it was actually just outside the window.

There was also a weird guy I could see from outside the window who'd been there for hours. Turns out he'd staked his place to watch the fireworks and was gone after they were done.

Oh and speaking of Timmies. I notice they now have Donut Sticks. Um, ok? They are more expensive than timbits, so I'm not really sure these will stick around for very long. You can buy a dozen timbits for less than those donut sticks and I don't even know how many of them you get; gonna guess six.

What are they like? Because I’m picturing like a Walnut Crunch, which is already basically a donut stick.

A long time ago they used to have Cherry Sticks, which was the same size and shape as a Walnut Crunch, but was of course cherry-flavoured. If you told me those were back, it would motivate me to go back to Timmies sooner rather than later! :D

They're totally different. It's as if they stretched out the timbits lengthwise. More like fair-food, I guess? They're churro-like with cinnamon sugar coating.

Oh, looked it up and it looks like you get 5. Not much of a deal IMHO.

And more Timmies. Today I tried their new Banana Split muffin. Honestly, nothing to write home about. It's actually a very bland muffin, and I don't even taste much banana in it, and I love their banana walnut muffins. It's got pieces of cherries and the crowning achievement is a very sweet chocolate filling.

could be worse - could be a banana choc-chip.

Surely there's gotta be something better to go with banana.

 I apparently need to go to Timmies much more often...

Actually, if they'd make banana chocolate chip cookies, that'd be awesome. This muffin though is a half-baked idea. It's like they had the idea but didn't fully go in on it. The muffin itself didn't taste of banana for something based on a banana split and it was actually a very dry cakey muffin until I got to the chocolate filling. It wasn't satisfying, taste-wise. What I'd have done is base it on their banana muffin, add cherry pieces and add chocolate chips that'd melt when baked.

Honestly, I have a love-hate relationship with Timmies. I love some of their concepts, but some of the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I've felt they've over-complicated some items and and failed in what should have been sure-fire hits. For example, their shortbread cookies at around Christmas. How can you mess up the classic shortbread cookies? But IMHO, they did, by adding a sugar icing filling. It changes the consistency. Sometimes simplicity is key.

Tim Hortons now has Beyond Meat burgers to complement their Beyond Meat breakfast sandwiches. The funny thing about this is that beyond their sandwiches made with cold-cuts and their chicken burger, they don't have regular burgers on the menu as a comparative. I find that really strange for some reason. It kind of creates an identity at odds with itself.

I know they want to be a full restaurant so badly, but TBH, I only ever go there for traditional coffee shop fare: coffee, doughnuts, timbits and muffins. And now that I've given up coffee, I barely go there at all.

I don't eat out much, but if I actually wanted fast food, Tim Hortons would not be anything that came to mind.

I think they are playing catch up. Possibly A&W is doing a booming business with their beyond meat burgers and timmies want on the business though tim hortons had already introduced the beyond meat products in their breakfast menu.

Though some-one did comment the other day they were surprised McDonalds wasn't in on the action at this point.
