Doing this as a tv series is a much better idea than doing it as a movie.

I hope this is a faithful adaptation of the series. Being on Netflix I am sure that there will be a lot of autonomy on the part of the show runners. Here's to hoping that this is something we will see.

Hot damn! This is awesome news!

And I agree that the series is much more suited as an ongoing series than a film. Gaiman once said he rather have no film than a bad one. Hopefully, with his involvement and recent successes with Good Omens and American Gods, The Sandman will finally see the light of day!

Nice. TV is really the best medium for it.
I wonder if they will adapt each volume as a season. That would be a nice structure.
But, as a side note, ABC's The Catch was TERRIBLE television. That may or may not have been down Heinberg. But, still.

That would be nice. The Preludes and Nocturnes volume though, is the only volume that would benefit from significant alterations to its content.

I feel that way about Seasons of Mists.

For me, adapting the story to fit the medium is not really significant alteration. Some issues would make for quite boring television, wouldn't they? Do you think Tom Ellis would play Lucifer?

Wow, this has a ton of potential, Netlfix seems like it would be a really good fit for this. The IGN article says that this is going to the most expensive series DC Entertainment has ever produced, so at least it sounds like they're really going all in on this.
Hopefully Gaiman will be involved in more than just name, and he'll make sure they keep it fairly accurate to the comics.

Gaiman tweeted that the first season will cover "Preludes," "Nocturnes," and "a little bit more" (presumably one of the one-shots). He also said that he hopes to make the series as personal as the comics were.

A Sandman series? Shut up and take my money!

Been forever since I read the series and just remember bits and pieces. What was it about those that could benefit from alterations?

I found Seasons of Mists boring. Or something. I honestly don’t remember. I remember finishing it and feeling Meh with the story.

So making it not meh or boring would be a start.

Preludes and Nocturnes were written before Gaiman found his voice with the character. Originally it was supposed to have been more of a pure horror series. Also, when it began it was firmly grounded in the DC universe with DC universe characters making appearances.

I wonder how much Neil Gaiman will actually be involved? The fact that he's talking about what they are doing is at least a sign that he's aware of what's going on, even if he's not involved on a day-to-day basis.

Hasn’t it been said that he’s co-writing the pilot?

Oh, is he? I thought he was just an Executive Producer, and it seems like half the time they give the creator an EP credit as a way of recognizing their role in creating the characters even when they have nothing to do with the show or movie. Stan Lee has an EP credit on pretty much every movie and TV show involving Marvel characters, but I don't think he actually had anything to do with any of them.

It would be awful, there's no chance the series will have ten seasons, it will most likely be cancelled after the third season, that seems to be Netflix preferred end point at the moment and even if it lasts longer it won't last ten especially not if it's really as expensive as they say it is. Look at what happened with the Marvel shows, it was an expensive deal for Netflix and ultimately not worth it.

The producers/writers should really plan for three seasons, approximately 30 hours is more than enough time to tell the story and they'd have a realistic chance actually finishing it.

I wonder how much Main line DC stuff they will keep?. Hector and Lyta Hall play a big part in a couple of stories. As do Cain and Able.
