Season 7 of Orange is the New Black with Red AKA Kate Mulgrew drops 7/26/19

Replace my statement "Frida is heavily implied to have committed murders" with "Frida is explicitly said to have committed several murders". So many she can't remember which ones she got caught for.

But she's not a protagonist. :)

Edit: And I totally forgot that Warren inflicted the wounds that eventually killed Kukudio, but you can't blame her for that sequence of events. The worst human being to appear on the show if it's not Vee or the Sisters is Humphreys. So you could argue, Humphreys and Kukudio killed each other.

It's interesting how the spread of morality is pretty much the same between the prisoners and the guards we see.

Season 4 might have been more effective if Piscatella were slightly less evil.

He could be a guy representing everything wrong with private prisons, a guy who dehumanizes producers and thinks they deserve what they get, and achieve the same effect without defending a guy who openly tortures prisoners.

I think he would have been a better villain as an overly harsh and aggressive play by the rules guy.

And I think the riot season is underrated. I rank the seasons 2, 6, 5, 1, 3, 4.

Edit: Another observation. I think they shot Poussey’s death scene badly. It wasn’t clear she was dead until Taystee started crying and no attempt was made to resuscitate her even though she had been dead ten seconds from lack of oxygen.

I agree. And perhaps I am mistaken but I am her size and had a grown man, and my two kids piled up on me. Yes, low oxygen; However, the shot made it appear no longer a duration than I had. I wasn't convinced she was dead until Taystee and went oh, they decided to off her. I didn't even get emotional until the final scene.

It sure didn't seem long enough to suffocate her.

And it would have been powerful if they had a scene of Piscatella trying to revive her by the book, failing, and then obviously not caring and reporting in a tone like it's a cold routine.

Also there's no way Poussey would have been clearly dead at that point, she looked like she was just unconscious. It was just not a well choreographed scene.

I got into season 6 in my rewatch.

Taystee accepting the terms too late is almost as sad to rewatch than Poussey’s death.

One story note I picked up, Mendoza’s date is “Coming up this summer”. A few months at most. This should come into play next season. Ruiz the obvious one who may want to quash that if her anger takes over again. But also maybe gangs making her pay an exit tax, although Diaz has a powerful enough ally to maybe pull strings for her.

Dixon is a weird character to figure out. He mostly seems like a decent guy by guard standards but then he casually talks about war crimes he committed in Afghanistan.

He tells that story about forcing a child to play with a grenade like he was being a good guy shooting him afterward.

One thing about OitNB I wish they kept the guard evilness level where it was earlier on.

Does the entire season drop on 1 day?

Yes.

Not sure what's going on in Argentina, but the OitNB crew has their back.

Compressive asphyxia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asphyxia

The saddest case of compressive asphyxia I can recall was one where 2 small children were alone at the playground, swinging on a rope slipped around both of their chests. Only the larger of the 2 children survived once the family found them.

It sure didn't seem long enough to suffocate her.

This video is sad and graphic, showing how quickly one can die from compressive asphyxia and that the ones who caused the death did not have the presence of mind to try to resuscitate the victim. I suspect this was the scene that OitNB was trying to emulate with Poussey's death.

Making all the guards "evil" would be as unrealistic as making all the inmates innocent. Showing how depraved people (guards and inmates) can be is enlightening.

The end is near.

@JanewayRulz!

Yeah but they did pretty much make all the guards, other than the original ones not named Mendez, extremely evil. War criminals, rapists, drug dealers, abusers. The one with PTSD from the riot and the Mormon are pretty much the only ones who have not committed worse crimes than 2/3 of the inmates.

Yeah, Mormon.

https://orange-is-the-new-black.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Litchfield_Staff

He was called Ryder Blake.

I miss the old "not Pornstache" guards from season 1, 2 and 3, before they were fired. (Interesting, Pornstache isn't one of the guards listed on the above wiki page, but he is searchable. https://orange-is-the-new-black.fandom.com/wiki/George_Mendez Poor Sam Healy, hes not even searchable. )

The one guy I thought was a good guy was Donaldson, the guy that ended up being a waiter at the restaurant warden Caputo ate at after he fired the old guys. I also kinda liked Wanda Bell and her fella Scott O'neill just because they were 2 love birds trying to find their way.

Technically they quit over being given reduced hours.

Hey, if this is the same prison that Nicky was in for parts of season 3 and 4, where are the British lady, Miss Claudette and the old woman who shanked Vee's lookalike?

I’m about 90% sure at some point in season 7, there will be a joke about how Piper names herself Piper Kerman in her memoir and somebody will point out the uncreativeness of just changing Chapman to Kerman.

I'm toward the end of season 6 now.

The way things end I'm expecting a conflict between Vause and Badison as revenge for going over her head to help Piper. Badison's not going to relent so that could easily escalate. Especially if they decide Cubra is smart enough to figure out the assassination failed.

My questions for all the characters after I finished my rewatch.

Taystee: Is Taystee implied to be on death row? I thought it was established New York had no death penalty. And if she got a life sentence why wasn't she just put back in genpop?

Gloria: They might try to keep her in shu because she knows about fantasy inmate, in which case Luscheck may have his guilt pangs again like the time he helped Nicky. But also the logical thing to happen is to offer her early release for a nondisclosure agreement, but if it went that way it'd be too easy and she'd just accept. We'll see what happens with so little time left on her sentence.

Ruiz: Will she stay on the righteous path? How will that work out?

Gang warfare: Daddy and Diaz poised to become the big boss in D block, Badison will make a play too and it'll be interesting what happens between her and Alex. Because Badison knows Alex went over her head but also probably needs her to have a supply pipeline, but Alex is also probably not interested now that Carol is dead and Piper is safely out. But Badison can hold her time hostage.

Red: Not sure where they can go for her from here. She may go to war with Frida or challenge Badison to succeed Carol.

Piper: I hope she doesn't appear much this season but enough to get closure, and it'd be great if they had her go to the other prison to interview prisoners for her memoir and give us viewers closure on them.

Cindy and Flaca seem like they'll continue to take the Flaca/Maritza comic relief role, but it's unclear how much time either of them have left.

Suzanne is probably going to become best friends with Doggit now. It seems natural, as Doggit will like having a friend and a follower again, and Suzanne needs someone to follow.
