Dune: The Sisterhood

WarnerMedia’s streaming service has given a straight-to-series order to the sci-fi project “Dune: The Sisterhood.”

The series hails from Legendary Television, with Legendary also producing the upcoming “Dune” film reboot from director Denis Villeneuve. Warner Bros. is distributing the film.

Set in the universe of Frank Herbert’s epic “Dune” novel series, “Dune: The Sisterhood” is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.

The concept does have ton of potential, but the involvement of those two is a bit concerning.

These are two talent-less hacks that have been squeezing gold out of Frank Herbert's corpse for years, for some reason still claiming they've been using the miraculously endless series of notes the old man left in a bank deposit box that no one knew about until someone needed a new book deal. Wish I'd thought of that.

KJA is a terrible writer. His EU stuff was abysmal. I never read his Trek book. Maybe he has written something worthwhile somewhere. I don't know. If I don't like a book, I donate it or resell it, or put it in the shelves and forget about it. House Harkonnen was the first book I ever threw in the dumpster. That was after 30 pages.
 
Slight ray of hope: A producer credit just as often as not can just mean said person just owns a piece of the IP, or has a prearrangement with the company that does, and must get a producer credit by contract stipulation alone without them having to actually do anything.
Simply put, they may not have anything creative to do with the show at all, regardless of credit.

All that said, I have to say regardless of who's involved, I'm a bit unsure as to exactly what the show would be about. I mean what period in history are we talking? The origin of the sisterhood? before Dune, with a young acolyte Jessica? During the reign of Paul? The era of the Tyrant? The Scattering? The return of the Lost Ones? The Sisterhood's goals, methods and outlook has changed radically over the course of the millennia after all. Would it focus on the breeding program? The missionaria protectiva? Their insider's perspective of the political intrigues of the Landsraad? Or just the inner politics and conflicts of Chapterhouse?

While the "young Jessica" option sounds like the most likely, it also would probably have the least to do with the Sisterhood itself and more to do with said character.

^ I think the plan is to tell the same story as the Dune film and novel, except from a Bene Gesserett perspective.
 
Sounds like it could be potentially good. Denis Villeneuve directing the pilot is a very good sign.

I've never read any of the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson books, but I've heard nothing but horror stories about them from devoted fans, so hopefully their producer role is less actual writing and more honorary.
 
This is a pretty cool idea, and probably has me more excited and interested than the movie itself does. Can't wait to see this develop.

My impression from the article is that it's likely set roughly in a similar time period of the movie/first novel, maybe a decade or so prior. This approach would make the most sense to me, it allows them to use costumes, sets, ship designs and even actors from the movie.
 
Lol. Can't have a Dune thread without Brian & Kevin bashing . They were also producers on the new Dune movie. Just like Eugene Roddenberry is on Discovery. Don't get too worked up.

Somehow I doubt very much of the look of the sisterhood, or even the Imperium has changed much over the millennia. You could probably set it in the year 5000AG and still have exactly the same costumes and sets.

Yes, the article says Brian (and a couple of others) are getting producer credit for Frank Herbert estate. Similar reason Rod Roddenberry is getting producer credit for all CBS Trek shows.
 
I find I'm much happier since I stopped paying attention to anything they do with Dune. The originals are masterpieces and no amount of additional hackneyed crap is going to change that.

True, but I'm sure the chance to use the same actors will be a consideration. Plus, having this set in proximity to the movie allows them to expand on the movie, and draw in fans who are new to Dune through the movie and want to further explore the world as set up there.

I think a prequel set a generation prior is by far the more likely option. Aside from movie actors being expensive, the Bene Gesserit essentially become irrelevant once Paul takes power, and their little attempt at rebellion leads them to be essentially collared and leashed by Leto for three and a half millennia. So with that in mind, the only really interesting stuff in terms of the sisterhood itself has to do with what went into their founding and set them on the path to try and create a super being. Finding that out through the lens of a young Jessica as she makes her way as an acolyte is about the only way to do that with a character people actually care about.

I know from first-hand experience interacting with the Dune fandom that there are in fact many people (myself included) who feel differently.
