Why in the world would they announce that it's cancelled NOW though? How does this timing benefit them?

If there's one "silver lining" in this, it's that we will ultimately have gotten a very exquisitely produced Swamp Thing "Limited Series" rather than having to deal with an ongoing series where the quality was forced to be noticeably decreased.

@kitik Announcing the cancellation now means that, once they get over their knee-jerk reactions, fans will know going forward that they're watching a single-run "Limited Series".

It's a disappointing cancelation since I've been looking forward to this (haven't watched the first ep yet; still working my way through Doom Patrol). Not surprising, though, given that its initial episode order was already cut. I figured the writing was on the wall at that point.

My main concern in the reduced episode count. Did they either cram what they had planned for Episodes 10-13 into Episode 10, or at least create a completely new Episode 10 that functions as a finale (similar to what Freaks and Geeks did)? If that's the case, then huzzah!

Or did they just say, "Fuck it!" and use the original Episode 10 script, giving us a series with no ending or closure? If they moronically went that route, why are we even here?

You assume they had a choice. It sounds like the shutdown was forced on them by the discovery of the budget mixup and the deep financial hole they were in as a result. In a situation like that, where the shutdown is forced by outside circumstances, they may simply not have had the time or money to rework anything. They may have just been told to stop work after they shot episode 10. Imagine how that would've felt for them, to be chugging along smoothly and suddenly be told they were out of a job and deep in the red and wouldn't be able to finish what they started. That's gotta be a lot more painful for them than it is for you, so try to have some sympathy.

Very true. Sorry. I selfishly wasn't looking at it from their perspective. As artists that pride themselves in their craft it's the worst case scenario.

According to Cinemablend, the cast and crew will have - or have already had - an opportunity to 'retool' the ending of Episode 10 to deliver a definitive and satisfactory ending, although this can't be confirmed by anyone directly affiliated with the DC Universe online community and service.

Honestly, I questioned how smart it was from the beginning. I just found it hard to believe they would be able to draw in enough subscribers to support all these big budget shows they had planned, and it's starting to sound like that might be the case.
IGN's article said the same thing, but I think that might have just been based off of Bloody Disgusting's story, so I'm not sure if that would really count as corroboration.

Just watched the pilot. It was alright but it felt very Resident Evil to me.

Given that Swamp Thing is the only series to be cancelled and that, as per multiple different sources, the cause of this cancellation is strictly money-related, I would not put much stock in rumors about the service's future being in jeopardy.

The two things are completely unrelated. And the plan isn't to cancel all of the DC Universe shows, just shut DC Universe itself down. Warner Bros. is considering moving Titans, Doom Patrol, Stargirl, Young Justice (If there's a fourth season. I don't know the showrunners long term plans for the revival.) and Harley Quinn over to their new Warner streaming service when it launches sometime this fall.

^ I don't think there's any reason at the present time to believe that such is the case, but we shall see.

And the rest of the series will likely be as well.

Art doesn't cease to be worthwhile - or worth paying to consume - just because it's finite.

They're conflicting reports on why it was cancelled. It was first reported that there was a funding mix-up with the North Carolina government meaning they got less money than they were told they were going to get but a Representative for the NA government said that it wasn't true and there wasn't any mix-up and they will get the rebate they were told they would get

As soon as I heard Warner's was going to have their own streaming, I thought DC Universe wasn't long for this Earth.

Their biggest problem was the pricing. This is a niche streaming service, regardless of what some may say. They're catering to only the fans of one specific genre, and their entire catalog is based off of one specific company's projects from that one specific genre. They're asking for $8 a month and struggling.

Meanwhile, fellow niche streaming service Shudder is just $5 a month and thriving.
